Today I am driving in kyrenia please excuse the name but I'm old and it means something to me. I came here in late 1963 with the British army and did the best job I could to protect you dear people I know it was not perfect but we lost people too. So en route to Nicosia I turn a corner in to a side street and find a double parked car in my way ,I stop a reasonable distance away to let the oncoming traffic clear the double parked car. Before this happens a mini drives out of the garage to my left and reverses into my car. I apply the handbrake as I am already stationary make sure my passenger is OK put my flashers on and get out to be met by a torrent of abuse from a small tattooed woman screaming why had I stopped. I did explain as did the nice gentleman who was her neighbor that it was her fault she should be looking in the mirror when reversing. She said I want money for my repair as I'm an advocate her neighbor shook his head and said she's not. I call the police she said fine by me but why have you moved your car I said. Then came this is my f***king country why are you here I'm Cypriot why are you her. I tried to explain how grateful her relatives were in 1964 to see us and if she didn't want foreigners here they might have a problem . More abuse my country etc etc. Can someone tell me the last time they were served by anyone other than a non Cypriot. Banks noncypriot , cafes noncypriot, restaurants non Cypriot, shops, car wash, garages, dolmus, taxis, dry cleaners, hospitals, all non Cypriots. Do you think one day they will appreciate the non Cypriots that pay to keep them in their mortgaged houses and financed cars. ........ I think not. Fortunately the nice Turkish policeman that turned up explained to her it was her fault not mine and she was very unamused. Thanks to the nice Cypriot neighbor that witnessed the accident and told the truth.
Sorry it's long but I feel better.

Sorry to hear of your unpleasant experience. Unfortunately zenophobia seems to be widespread in the modern world.

I also wonder how many Cypriots , particularly of the older generation, have actually passed a driving test.

I think the older Cypriots even not passing a test are more aware of how much they are better off after all they went through. The younger ones though are different many are work shy and have the me me attitude. Sad
Y though it's the same the world over. But this is the only place where the locals look down on the people who actually work to keep them in the style they have grown accustomed to.
