Türk Telekom sign deal to increase internet speed in TRNC

Hi,

I'd rather be the bearer of good news than bad. So yeah, Kıbrıs Gazetesi announced that earlier today CEO Paul Doany of Turkey's Türk Telekom signed a deal with the respective TRNC minister to in particular increase internet speed.

Doany said that they will include TRNC in their "digital transformation" with fiber optical cables and the like ... which apparently could increase internet speed here by 6 fold over the next three years. Doany also mentioned lower prices ... yeah, that seems unlikely to me as well

Yes, it all seems a bit too good to be true ,,, so click on the link below ... and google translate or otherwise.

It all sounds lovely, but no mention of the repetitive slowdowns, and consequently no assurance that they won't keep on happening...

When the Internet is running 'normally', I think that most people get as much speed as they need, most of the time - faults will occur with individual user's installations; interference, faulty cables and equipment etc., it's inevitable, but on the whole we have enough capacity in the feed from Turkey.

What we need is consistency, not more capacity.

Keith, surely this will enable us to download files much quicker. For example, some of the BBC radio podcasts are currently taking me over ten minutes to download.

Increased capacity will improve consistency, less conflicts, less traffic jams... The move to an ultra fast fibre-optic cable will definitely improve things until some bright spark digs it up by accident... you'd be surprised how often Vodafone's were undermined by reckless digger operators.(BT and British Gas were our main bugbears).

"In his statement following the signing ceremony, Minister Atakan said they will be able to provide high speed and capacity internet service with more reasonable prices. “We are continuing our efforts to develop the IT sector in our country,” said Atakan. “To reach this goal we need to increase the quality of internet while lowering the prices. With the deal we struck with Türk Telekom, we have managed to lower the price of gross Metro Ethernet internet at an important rate, something which has not been updated for nearly 10 years.” Atakan said that for the current use capacity, which is 75 gigabytes per second, the amount paid by the Telecommunications Department will be cut off by 30 per cent, and the bill will further fall by nearly 45 per cent after the capacity is increased to 100 gigabytes per second. “The discounted prices will be in effect after the issuing of TRNC Telecommunications Department Fees Regulation on August 1, providing between 40 and 50 per cent discount to the price of internet bought by internet service provider” Atakan said, adding this will create a healthier environment for prices charged for consumers. Atakan also said in addition to this, the fibre infrastructure of the country will be developed in a short time."

I'm standing by for the reduction in internet prices..........

Please can we have fibre optic mains phones instead of the never ending reliance on mobile phones. To me that is more of a priority.

If my memory serves me correctly, which isn't that good these days, fibre optic phone cables were laid alongside when the new Turkish water pipes were laid. I also remember that the local telephone workers saw fibre optic as a threat to their jobs (rather than grasp the opportunity of learning new skills) and went on strike to oppose it.

Wasn’t the fibre in the orange ducts beside the new water pipes for control and monitoring of the water supply? Nothing to do with the phones or internet.

Overall its positive step. We probably won't see the benefits trickle down to us wireless consumers for sometime. Its often that last mile that's fails here. Like my base station overheating last weekend.....

Agree - positive step and about time.

However you can put the best fibre connection in but its only as good at the equipment either end... the Turkish end will be fine.

It will now be down to the ISP's to upgrade their equipment to match the speed of the fibre.
