Is it legal here to have a bonfire in your garden.

I need to burn some garden clippings.
The big stuff, I make into firewood, the smaller stuff I shred and recycle-but there is some stuff that wont go through the shredder-I thought of buying a small garden incinerator (anyone know where to buy one?).
I realise I could just dump it at the side of the road that seems to be the norm here but I am not keen-although I do understand the potential argument re smoke vs letting it rot somewhere.
Any advise?

As far as I know it is illegal (unless they changed the law recently) but no-one has told my neighbours who simply wait until I have put the washing out and then burn the smeliest most smoke producing items they can find!
I collect empty cardboard boxes from the shop, fill them with small garden clippings , let them dry through summer and burn them on the fire in winter. Then I use the ash to lighten the soil. Saves a kuruş or two as well.
Or have a word with the Muhtar's office - I think they will collect garden rubbish on request - but put in plastic bags (which of course split) NOT in the standard dustbin.

Rose-maybe a compost heap is the answer when I think about it-If built of stone it would retain the heat maybe, and therefore make good leaf mulch-I will put it on my project list.
Thank you for confirming though that bonfires are illegal.
Despite the fact that the farmer behind me regularly burns plastic waste (which gives off cyanide gas) sneakily at night.

Philoz.
Do what the locals do, burn the garden rubbish as the sun is setting, as this is the time the wind dies down.
Please remember to pour water on the ashes after the rubbish has been burned.

Karmels- I am confused now.
Rose says it's illegal-And that was my original question.
My next door neighbour does what you suggest-and so I have to breath cyanide fumes from molten plastic as I sleep(please see original post)
I am just trying not to do anything anti social.

Philoz (are you planted by the mods to increase the number of posts?
Just because something is illegal doesnt mean people dont do it! You make your own decisions acccording to you conscience and risk avoidance strategy!!!!!! And how well you know local prisons.
The laws are because of the very high summer fire risk, and despite the recent rains things are still pretty dry and a spark could set dry gras or leaves alight so if you cant be good at least be careful, avoid fires under overhanging trees and shrubs and in windy conditions and keep a hose pipe handy.

Rose-I knew I could rely on you for the answer, well that's me off to Soyden in the morning for 5 litres of petrol and the lot is going up!-I will do it subtly of course.
No I am not planted by the Mods- In fact I suspect the mods are watching my every move I suspect.
Not that I do or say anything wrong-I just don't always conform as a poster should.

philoz, the law is, at least in bellapais, if you wish to have a garden bonfire, you first ask permission from your local muhtar, and inform them of the day, and time you intend to have the fire.
If you light it without permission you are liable to a fine.

I was under the same impression as Blue Butterfly, controlled burning is allowed by permission and generally not given if after May and before October.
My father when he moved here in 1987 always had a fire when he cut back in the spring and autumn and all his neighbours helped and burnt theirs at the same time. All loved his old oil drums which he used to do the control burning. Must admit there was not the rubbish lying around in those days.

It does not matter how careful you are, choose a calm day, no washing out etc but as soon as you light a fire the wind rises and your neighbours washing appears.
Leave it outside, ask the Belidiye to collect. They will dump it in the nearest ravine for you.

RR and BB - My advice would take your discussion off forum because as we all know things can quickly escalate out of control.
You have both contributed gratly to this forum and we would not want either of you to feel unhappy posting in the future.
Hopefully an off board discussion will clear the air and whilst you may not agree with each other at least you can respect the view of the other person and move on.
Good Luck & Best Wishes.

Posh: I have sent a PM to Soner as I dont think posters should be alllowed to give personal information about where another poster lives. Personally I am afraid I wont be posting here again, I know the mods have a hard task and dont blame them but I no longer feel safe.

Rambling Rose, I feel that you're over reacting a bit, I for one am no wiser as to where you live from the previous posts. Perhaps you should try to sort it out off board as advised and clear up any misunderstanding rather that stop contributing to the forum.

Well Philloz your bonfire of a post seems to have spread from your garden
Understand where BB is coming from.
RR calm down I for one and I'm pretty certain most members do not know your address and have no wish to know. I may be censured for this but I think your are in danger of being a bit paranoid as to your personal safety
Posh - you are doing a great job, thanks

Guess we are all different. I sign myself as Maid Marion of Malatya so everyone knows where Iliv e. And don't bother to come round for tea, cos I am hardly ever here. #Im downstairs may be but as he is deaf as a post, you wuld be wasting your time. But as you know I am always prepared to meet friends in town in one of our glorious coffee bars!
I happen to know who RR is and where she lives and have been to her house, and of course I respect her privacy because that is what she wants. But it is sometimes difficult for folk ,like me who like others to know who I am etc, to always understand that others are of a very different ilk. I am not sure I know what RR is afraid of, but equally I respect that she has a right to ask foor her privacy and privateness tobe respected.
However, I have been out all day and have no iidea of what was written here that caused the temperature to rise..
and I am sorry that anyone got upset, but the other side of the discussion coin, is that if you wish to remain almost anonymous, and want others to respect that, maybe it does not pay to get into public discussion too deeply but to pm each othher. That way you are giving away nothing baout privacy, can still continue a discussion as an anonymous soul and hopefully learn a little more of how and why the other person thinks as they do.
I am very sad that Kibkom has reached that stage, and of course I do not know what BB has said to cause offence. I probably don't know BB as well as I know RR and I repeat what I have said many times - that words in writing do NOT convey emotions, facial expresisons, body language, and something said face to face can be taken quite differently to the written word.
What a rotten shame. I am truly sorry about this and hope that both BB and RR can come to some understanding and BOTH continue to conntribute.

What I have missed??
I only asked about lighting a fire and seem to have inadvertently lighted something else.
In the event of unintentionally causing any more cat fights-I will burn subtly, and discreetly.
Moderators-I have now obtained the answers I sought, you may now close this post.
(In the interests of public safety).
Thank you for all the helpful replies - sorry I missed the brawl.

I missed it too Philoz. Just heard a bit from other sources. But if you are happy that youhave all your answers, I will now lock this. You have not caused a stir, but i think what you have shown is that this country, like many others, has rules which get broken/bent! Personally i would not risk seeing the inside of the local prison, even if locals bend the rules to suit themselves. Maybe a word with the local Muhtar will put you clear and then if you do what they say, all will be well. the fire hazard is huge. Even when I lived in Somerset, the lighting of bonfires had to be very controlled as the health of the elderly residents in the area had to be taken into consideration and there were a lot with breahting difficulties in the area - so I guess wherever one lives there are factors to consider. And thanks to you for showing that you were aware of this.
If you want the thread unlocked just ask, or start another thread if you need further answers.
Keep smiling.
