There is a lack of Sterling in the local ATMs lately - I can understand if the banks are doing this deliberately to prevent a run on changing to Lira. Does anyone know if it is possible to get Sterling out now - housekeeping time is looming! Perhaps from the ATMs in Girne???

I haven't been here long but I suspect it is due to Bayram next week as much as anything. They are always short at the weekend as well.

Just to add a query to that. Are the Exchange places open next week?

I can't see why a Bayram next week should influence the replenishing of ATMs this week.

I thought that they were encouraging people to BUY Lira, perhaps they don't realise that we use the Sterling to buy Lira because we get a rotten exchange rate from our UK Banks if we withdraw Lira direct from the ATMs...

As I said not been here long but my understanding is everything stops for Bayram. Last time they had one the queues in the supermarket reminded me of Christmas in the UK when everyone thinks the shops are going to be shut for three months instead of a day. So I imagine that a lot of people are using them thinking that they may not be able to use them next week, Notice the use of the word imagine so it is not from facts.

As it happens I have just been to the one near Leather World and it was being worked on and out of use when I got there but 10 minutes alter I managed to withdraw some sterling.

Chriswright03 if that's the ATM opp Ya Beles I was there at 12.30 today and there wasn't any Sterling! I'm now going have to take the money out in TL and change it back to Sterling!

Is bankamatic opposite Tempo had sterling yesterday Catalkoy.

I have just managed to get sterling from the ATM machine (Garantee Bank) by the garage after Escape beach, so they have replenished now. Lots of people taking sterling so it may not last long ...! Cyprus2011, do you not lose money in changing TL back to Sterling at these rates??? Or am I missing something?

Did you manage to find a cash point that had sterling in it ? If not PM me and I may be able to help. If you have for example a UK sterling account, then you could online transfer sterling to my UK sterling account and ill give you the equivalent in sterling cash here locally (as a one off to try and help out, I can not do this on any sort of regular basis).

I managed to get Sterling from the ATM opposite Tempo Catalkoy tonight. Limit of £300 per card. However, £60 of it was damaged therefore unlikely to be able to get it changed Wont be using that one again...

The ATMs down Lapta/Alsancak way now appear to have been topped up with Sterling - so good luck all.

You can't get TL from anywhere here in the UK. Our son has been trying to order it for his visit but the usual outlets are not trading in TL. He's tried Post Offic, Tesco, Adsa and the Money Shop-and also Thomas Cook. Crazy!!

Managed to get some from the Garanti atm opp Ya Beles so it must have been topped up......... bet it's empty again now though!
