New Regulations for Dog Ownership in Alsancak

Following recent reports of a dog owner in Alsancak being told by the Belediyre that there was a new law and each household were only allowed to own three dogs, KAR chairperson Margaret Ray first met with Enver Ozberim and then attended an arranged meeting at the Belediyre offices. A great deal of discussion took place and further discussions are planned after Byram. It was confirmed that this by-law is now in force but only applies to those takingin new dogs and not those that already have had over three dogs for many years and are registered. The Belediyre will only act against households with large numbers of dogs if thereis a complaint lodged against them. Alsancak Belediyre will be announcing through their website, newspapers and leaflets to homes outlining the new regulations after Bayram. KAR would urge all dog owners to make sure all their dogs (if they have not already done so)are registered with their local authorities as soon as they re-open after the holiday. The meeting was attended by many expats as well as local pet owners. Mayor Firat Ataser talked about many other problems relating to dog ownership and suggested that there would be further meetings to try to resolve those problems. KAR intend to report any further meetings and update any changes

So is this just in Alsancak?

O, it’s a byelaw that can be activated anywhere, but as long as you dogs are microchipped, registered and paid up yearly at the council offices, then it’s not an issue.

My thoughts are "Where would a dog be more likely to contract distemper?

a) Wandering about the streets, coming into contact with other stray dogs, or

b) Secured on someone's premises, vaccinated and supervised"

If it's is money how are they getting it? A tax on each dog when there is more than 3?

Rather than all the rumours and misinformation, perhaps it might be better to wait until after Bayram when offices are open and then go an register your dogs for this year. It will be in the papers, on the Facebook (for those of us that have it and I don't)) and a notice to be handed to all households (probably stuck in your gates in reality and will need translating). Please don't take the 3 too literally as yet. There.s an awful lot of knee jerk reactions and things could change as time passes.

From what I've read in the reports Sophie, going forward only 3 dogs allowed. Those in situ are ok as long as registered & I think chipped

Cally, I think you will find if you have, say 5 dogs, and have had these 5 dogs chipped and registered with your local Belediye on a yearly basis in the past and can show the appropriate paper work, then you are just fine. If and when one of the dogs dies, then you mustn't replace it. Eventually you get down to 3. That is what I mean by not taking the 3 dog rule too literally. When a dog dies, you can tell the Belediye that you are down to 4 and so on.

Well, not "have to"...
There are always options and alternatives....
Otherwise, everywhere will have some sort of "regime" - except, of course, Merry Olde England - which is where everyone wants to return to?
