Just ne aware folks that our house was broken into today between 12.30pm and 2pm. We live in lower Ozankoy not far from the main road. went out for lunch and cam home to find safe had been attacked with an axe stolen from the shed. We do,have CCTV and have captured the intruder on film police have been good so,far and hopefully we will,get a result.What is worrying is that a few nights ago the CCTV shows the imtuder at about 11.30pm at night in the garden.
He then moved the angle,of,two,cameras which are low to,show the main entrance. I thought this strange when I Saw the angle and re adjusted them. He was so cool. Locked,on the door and gained entry. Spent 12 minutes inside and then returned and put on gloves. Done us up like a kipper. Just be aware folks .

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. We are in upper Ozankoy and our neighbours holiday rental villa was burgled 3 times last year until we fitted additional security locks. Unfortunately the intruder was never caught. Do you know the nationality of your intruder?

perhaps he was carrying and waving a large national flag ........

If he was dark skinned and had a beard probably from birmingham....

Really sorry to hear about your burglary. Makes me renew efforts to be more security conscious again. It sometimes slips here. It's horrible knowing that someone has wandered around your house isn't it?

What a horrible thing to happen thank you for posting we must all be extra vigilant.
Can I ask do you have a dog? These are supposed to be the best deterrent although CCTV should also deter intruders of course.
Hopefully the police will make an arrest & anything stolen will be returned to you.

Thanks for all your good wishes they are appreciated. I thought I had posted an update to this last night but it does not appear to have been sent. However Judyvin I understand what you are saying. The CCTV captures a good image which the police think shows a European suspect as opposed to Med, origin. We now have some other images of the intruder without his red hat On his his first attempt on the night of Friday 24th at about 11.30pm when he moved two cameras to avoid identity I am prepared to post these photographs on the forum if agreed by the moderators and somebody tells,me how to do,it,.
Osankoys yes we do have a dog but he is very old,half blind and has heart problems. The intruder ignored him and was very casual in his approach. He does not appeared to,be concerned about anything.
From watching the playback we saw that he spent over 50 minutes in the house most of this time I assume attaxking the safe with an axe. He seems to want jewellery,cash and computers.
There is a possibility that he may have had a silver Hyundai Tuscon hire car with red rental plates.
Whilst the CCTV system did not appear to disturb him it has given us a very good idea of what he looks like and therefore a better chance of the police in catching him. It's put our mind at rest as its not somebody we knew or worked on the house. I am now going to upgrade the system. Thanks once again and Imwill keep you up to date.

Thank you sooner for your very quick response and agreement to publish the photographs.I have forwarded them on to you and hopefully you have received both the day time images which give a rough idea of the intruder and the infrared night images which should practically identify the thief by someone who knows him. Let me know please if you don't receive them as I am not a techno. Thanks once again and the sooner we get them out there of course the better.

In theory I'm in total agreement with showing his face etc., but in reality will it not mean he will do a runner if his gets to know that he's been clocked? Maybe I'm missing a trick here?

We have to identify him. It may also prevent other people from being broken into. If he runs then at least we will now who he is. I told,the police I was doing this and had no objection. Let's get the blokes details out there and at least catch him. At least we are being pro active and sitting on our hands.x

Hi, I`ve printed a load of these and we`ll put them in the coffee shops at the top of the village and also the barber shops. Is there a police number or reference I can put on the poster for someone to contact if they recognise anything? If you have a less pixilated picture of the one where he`s wearing the hat, that would be helpful I think as those shorts are quite distinctive.

Sorry the CCTV shows it more clearly but I Think the infrared photo does show his profile and type of person we are looking for. You just have to look at it for a few moments to focus,. Let's fight back folks we can't always rely on the emergency services to,help us. I am going to contact Cyprus today and our Turlish neighbours want me to go public on the Turkish newspapers. They have been fantastic. Love this country. We have all this new technology so why not use it.
Having said this the local police are still using the old brush and powder to find fingerprints we can not always rely upon our crime fighters to help us and have to do our own thing. Thanks once again folks this villain must be caught if only to prevent other folks from going through the drama that we nave expirenced.

Great joy. The wonderfu Kyrenia police have only gone and caught our burglar. Not only that they have recovered about 80% of the stolen items. I have nothing but praise for them and it has restored my faith in this beautiful island.
More to follow when I have some details thanks to you for your support but what a great police force we have. I shall be taking the whole crew out to celebrate.

I too was burgled at night while we were asleep many moons ago took ages to get over it.

JV - can I ask - where did you get your security system?

We bought ours from Boravin in the small parade of shops along from the supermarket Bektash. Opposite the Teachers College. We had 4 cameras and a Modem with fixing and fixtures I Think it cost 2000 Lira. That was about 1 year ago. You can choose as many cameras as you wish. I am updating mine now with a higher density quality camera and installing some more. 0392 815. 6805
Whilst it didn't deter my intruder it did assist the police in catching him quickly and recovering most of the stolen items.
What with the state of the economy and bleak outlook there is a chance that more frequent home invasions will occur.

The actual installer does not speak a word of English but his side kick is Pasastani and you can converse with him.

jackvern, is your current - as you are upgrading - system hard wired or WiFi? I am considering going WiFi as my current system - two hunting dogs - are getting old now but I am not a great supporter of hard wired systems. Still got to provide power to the cameras which gives a bit of a problem in some areas and still calculating arc's of vision but almost at the point of purchase! PM me if you wish as all systems have potential loop holes in them but even false cameras act as a deterrent at most times.

If in Saudi, he could be a 'hands-free' operator in the future. Let's hope he gets jail time and enjoys the experience. If non-TC, deportation after serving his time.

Waddo I am not a techno but my system is wired My new system will be the same but have a back up facility in the case of a power cut and higher definition cameras. You are more than welcome to look at it and judge for yourself. While I have some high cameras for a general view I also have some that can capture facial images. There is not a lot of wiring which I did not want.
Having spent hours reviewing the CCTV coverage I have him and his vehicle watching my house for a number of days.
When we left on the morning of the Burglary he was parked up the road and had covered his windscreen with cardboard. As we drove past him he got out and removed it. He followed us to make sure we had left and then returned and broke in. He looks like he's done this before and on a lot of occasions. He was as I have said very cool and confident.
It appears he has appeared at Court today and been photographed by the press. His name has been given as Soner Aydan. He also it is reported has committed a crime at a hotel in Chatalkoy when he stole a Rolex and large amounts of cash.
My wife is a big Facebook fan.
We may have taken a major player out. he would have kept going and ruined other people lives.
Thanks God for the CCTV and the boys in blue. They need a little help.

A great result although I suspected it would not take too long before he was apprehended as I have never before seen an account of such a bungling amateur.

Wearing such distinctive clothing whilst staking out your property and what appears from the photograph to be Hunting gear identified him as a local and not a foreigner. Attacking the Safe with an axe could have alerted neighbours who knew that you were out. Spending as long as 50 minutes inside the property and even then still not seeking out and destroying the video recorder since he was fully aware of the CCTV cameras. It all beggars belief.

It is a sad indictment of the times when such high security systems are needed on this island although it does appear burglaries are more common on the North coast since, in 10 years, I do not know of any break-ins here on the East side and it is rare to see any camera security systems on properties, probably because the residents are mainly TC's.

Whilst I have deliberated this and like you I cannot believe a good burglar would not take an axe to the safe The review of the CcCTV tapes show a degree of planning and determination that he was not as you say a bungling amateur.He is from Istanbul and his Face Book page shows him as being well dressed and not a yokel.
The police visited again today and have said that when arrested he was in possession of a complete set of Burglary implements including a large amount of keys and Master keys.They are of the opinion that he is a professional and has come to Cyprus to commit crime. His careful study of the house and observations they want to place before the court to bolster their assumptions.
He refuses to talk at the moment and admits nothing. The police suspect him of a number of other offences.
He will be at Court again tomorrow when they will apply for a further remand for 8 days to continue enquires.
What is interesting is that Turkey and Cyprus do not share joint information on normal crimes or fingerprints.
He was caught because we made our own enquires traced the car and were able to give a very good description of the Burglar and items stolen. The police did the rest

I was in my time, inter alia, an insurance claims investigator.

Having implements and keys do not make this guy a 'Pro' It was his Modus Operendi that show him to have been a Clown. In addition to what I mentioned previously parking his vehicle anywhere near the scene in daylight hours and knowledge of your CCTV cameras from his previous observations should have made him extra cautious.

Perhaps he knew that you had a regular rendezvous at that time and that day and knew how long you were likely to be away but I suspect not. Trust me Burglars get in and out as quickly as possible, don't waste time rifling through your things, they empty all drawers onto the floor, same with cupboards and wardrobes, toss mattresses off the beds and cushions off the furniture after feeling the pillows and cushions, they know where people hide things, They will do a whole room in just a very few minutes. Safes do normally defeat them in occupied properties, they just don't have the time and put it down to 'bad luck' but there are really very few Safes in private houses.

The Police, with your help, have an open and shut case, surprising there is no co-operation between Turkey & TRNC but hopefully they will be able to prove other break-ins against him which will lengthen his sentence.

As footnote to that 'Press' story is it still not the case that TRNC & Turkish citizens are not allowed into Casino's?

I recall a number of years ago in the European Hotel in Gazi playing the Slots when a bell started to ring . A great number of bodies ran past us heading for a small door in the far corner of the room. A couple of minutes later 3 plain clothed Police accompanied by the Manager and some staff arrived. A table was prepared for then and they were supplied with drinks and maybe 'white envelopes. So there they were sitting among rows of unoccupied machines all having credit on them. Shortly after they left the 'All Clear' bell sounded and those fleeing gamblers all resumed their seats.
What a farce!.

Turkish Cypriots are not allowed in the Casinos. However those who hold a passport from another country (ie UK) use those as ID instead of their Kimlik if they wish to go. So far as I know there is no restriction for Turkish citizens as I know many who come from the mainland just for the casinos........as of course there are none in TR.
