Today a government interviewer stop by my home and asked questions. The main questions were about holiday homes. I was told 12 years ago that they keep tabs on landlords paying tax on lettings and here she was in person in Karsiyaka.
Suggest if you do let for holidays then you declare the tax as they seem to be serious about this.

We had a couple of people ask questions about our property last week. We thought it was some sort of survey, however the above post could have been the reason for the checks.

They not only asked us if we lived in our property but also asked about the other five properties along our row.....were they occupied, rented etc.

We live close to Catalkoy.

It happened to me in about 2003, exactly the same circumstances.
Glad to see they are still trying to catch the cheats, Long May it continue.
Every few months would be better, rather than every 15 years.

It happened to us in 2016. They were asking about all the other villas on the site too, whether they were holiday homes etc.

Great news! Shame they don't combine those questions with ones about driving licenses, road tax, insurance, MoT and car ownership - maybe a suggestion is in order!

Hear hear! I am sure there are plenty of expat dodgers and I am sure that back home they would have plenty to say about foreigners not paying taxes!

rest assured , the authorities here are not stupid ; listings on holiday lettings .com etc , showing as not available indicates that tax is due

I seem to remember that in a thread last year(?) that it was suggested they even monitored electricity usage (Kibtek bills) against owner in/outs to discover whether property was used (ergo rented out) when the owners were not in the TRNC....

Few years back some friends were presented with a heavy tax bill. Went to the appropriate office and were shown on a PC screen the lettings and otherwise of the their property on THREE letting companies. They tried to fight their case for 4 particular weeks, saying it was members of their family and they hadn't been charged. (perfecty true). Finally the lady at the desk halved the tax for those particular weeks. There were 4 people in the office who it seems did nothing but scour letting companies advertising properties to let in the TRNC. Wonderful thing the web isn't it??

I have always found them very fair down at the tax office if you can back up your facts, so far I have had 100% success with sorting out 5 customers and my Father's tax demands due to the fact they rented their houses and did not register and submit their financial gains.
The tax office admit they send out the highest amount to get the person in the office to open the file, my father had his house on the holiday site for £300pw so he had a demand for £15,600 x 3years. I have also seen several people insult and shout at the staff when they have been sent a demand.
