Potatoes 5tl per kilo

Just got some lovely King Edwards type potatoes at Ozce supermarket at 5TL a kilo. We bought 4 kilos for just over 20TL, if I had been more entrepreneurial I should have bought the whole shop.

Now come on, I got 10 out of 10 for spelling at school. Ozce (pronounced urzzchey, I'm not using Turkish script) is on the right hand side of the road just before Gaziveren, heading west. It's next to a newly renamed Mustafa's kebab shop. Funnily enough there is a roadside greengrocer's hut 200 metres further on selling them at 13TL a kilo.

These ones were unbelievably fresh too and jacket sized. If anyone is going to the CMC golf course the supermarket is on the way there and back.

10TL kg at Iskele Market, very small. Never thought I would see the day when the humble spud was be more expensive than capsicum, aubergine and green beans selling between 6 to 9 TL, and the same price per kg as some delicious seedless green grapes.
I planted a couple of rows of potato at the start of October which will be ready for our xmas /new year dinners and grow to main crop size thereafter by which time they will no doubt be cheap as chips (sorry for the pun) in the shops, that's usually the way.

germany:
due to draught, potatoe production 2018 is down 25-30%, wholesale prices up approx 50%.
(50%... because still too many potatoes remain on the fields.. because they are "not suitable for marketing".. laos happens to many other goods as cucumbers and so on...)

Yesterday, Starlings were selling when translated meant "red potatoes" i.e. they were covered in red soil, for 12.99tl. Beside them were older potatoes with thicker skins, for 5.45tl (I think) I bought the older, soiless spuds and they were perfect for mashing. Perhaps they were the ones kibsolar 1999 describes as "not suitable for marketing" and I admit they didn't look as attractive, however they were perfect for my needs.

no.
in cyprus they offer all potatoes harvested....
but in germany, europe , the Uk .... they leave "unsuitable" stuff, as "out of size"(usually too small), " wrongly formed" aso, on the fields.
btw, not because the EU "forbids" the marketing of those.... it is simply because nobody will buy it and-or because the price you could get for these would be too low.

kibsolar, yet another reason for getting out of EU then?

sorry sophie.. i did not make it clear...
the EU does NOT forbid to market those "out of size products", it is also a myth that "bandy" or "too small" cucumbers are not permitted by the EU..
it usually is the industry (eg here for potatoes: for the large quantities of french fries) , the wholesalers, the retailers and the endcustomer who does not want these products and producers are forced to leave them on the fields.

Aw - c'mon fellers, (sob) you must have seen cornier puns than that in the past!
Puns are KC's territory, I shall leave them to him in future.
With all of this recent rain my 'taty' crop is looking really good, must keep a watchful eye out for potato blight which i have suffered in the past, it takes no time at all to ruin the entire crop.

Bought a 1Kg of what appeared to be a decent sized spuds last Friday (albeit thick with red soil which obviously I paid for) However, when I got home and soaked them in kitchen sink I found that more than half were unfit for human consumption. Either bright green or rotten and black inside. I weighed what was left and there was indeed less than half a Kg to keep. Disillusioned for sure.

Her indoors says they are very good, but be careful getting in and out the car park, as the cars tend to whizz around the long bend.
