Went to open an account, cashier said ok but you’ll need a mukhtar letter? Never had to get a letter before to open an account. Is this normal?

Well, Guney, the Muhter works in the bank so it should not be a problem.

Ok super, thanks , how much does he charge for a letter? Oh and they told me 16% upto 100k and 20% over 100k. Thought that sounds reasonable

Just as a matter of interest, how much up to 100k are they talking about, 95,000K or less? I assume you are talking sterling. Thanks.

Any amount under 100k sterling 16% interest given. That’s what the cashier said to me.

IIRC I used my monthly water/rates bill as proof of address plus, obligatory for everything, Passport ID of course.

The 16% interest quoted is correct and that is for only 3 month deposits. obviously rather more for longer deposits, Whilst the TL has strengthened somewhat in recent weeks obviously Bankers are not convinced of any stability in the near future to be offering such an amount of interest which is up from the10% given for deposits in the previous three months.

I was one of the refugees who needed to find a new bank when HSBC pulled out of Turkey this time last year and chose Limassol Bank in our local village ( Yeni Bogazi) due tto it's convenience. The Staff are very friendly and helpful, however, I have a major issue with the Debit Card which is issued by 'CardPlus' there are so many businesses that do not have a terminal machine to accept the card which has been a major inconvenience on many occasions plus the fact the terminals are setup for credit cards and require a different setup for debit cards which I need to explain to most places that do have the terminal. Because of language difficulties I now carry a piece of paper written in Turkish which makes life easier. Add to that I had to pay 50TL issuing charge for this card plus a 50TL deposit and I had another issue with the card today, which is the cause of this rant, and which has determined me to go and see the Manager tomorrow and if they cannot obtain a 'VISA' card for me I shall be moving to another Bank who can.

tt.
