I grew up in Leipzig and music from Bach was a big part of my life. I had never heard his music played as a solo on flute, My friend shared this with me - Toccata and Fugue in D - magic!!!!!

Lovely to listen to, however, being a bit of a traditionalist, I still prefer to hear it played on a 30,000+ pipe organ. (which is small compared to some I admit) but big enough for me!!

Thank you dippers girl for sharing this.

A wonderful rendition of this well known piece. On the flute the piece sounds lighter and almost fanciful as opposed the the usual organ production which exudes power and a degree of threat in parts. All different, all beautiful.

I suppose great music contains many dimensions which can be released by great musicians on different instruments.

This is a beautiful rendition by a very talented musician. Its a shame that it is just not possible to play a fugue on such an instrument. I wonder how it would sound with her multi tracking the fugal parts !

Well, having lived in Leipzig for more than 10 years (before the wall was built!!) I have heard most of Bach's music with and without orchestra, organs big and small, in places with stunning acoustics, different churches, Thomaskirche and my local church, Markuskirche, where amazing performances of all the great works from Bach were performed, with all the great names taking part. This may not be the 'best', but it elicited quite an emotional feeling from me!!

Not suggesting it was the best or otherwise, just different. I agree it was beautiful but I just prefer an organ rendition. Like you music can bring back wonderful memories, I once walked from my office in the Cathedral Close into Norwich cathedral and spent my lunch hour listening to the organist practicing the Toccata and fugue in D. Absolute magic, particularly as just for once I appeared to have the cathedral to myself!!

Sophie, how I agree - it needs the resonance and grandeur of a big church/cathedral organ

There is a very interesting programme on BBC Radio 4 Extra called "Bach Fever". It explores the diverse interpretations of Bach by a range of musicians and instruments. It was broadcast today but can be found on catch up. It will be available for next 29 days.
