Trying to get my head round things !!

Very soon we will be moving permanently to TRNC (as permanent as things are) from the UK - we are a young couple (59 and 65 respectively)
trying to find out the correct way of doing things is somewhat difficult.
We know of people who have been out here for over 5 years and still driving on UK licence and not taken up residency. Others have have done the opposite.
Both seem to have no problems either way.
We will be renting a villa but buying a car.
My mother lives in Paphos so will be be visiting her at least once every 3 moves .
Does it really matter which way you do it.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you are buying a car here you need a TRNC licence for insurance purposes

That must be a new requirement TRNC licence for insurance purposes,I lived there for 8 years and owned a car
I insured every year and not once was I asked for a driving licence of any kind, only passport when renewing insurance.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t get a TRNC licence but it’s not required when insuring your car.

I think that if you check with the insurance company they will inform the policy holder of what is best

Foreigners may use their own national driving licence throughout the 90 days of their tourist entry visa (see separate residency section). Those who wish to continue driving beyond this period are required by law to apply for a TRNC driving licence within 30 days. Failure to do this may invalidate motor insurance policies and result a court case and a monetary fine.
Please note that if those who are aged under 60 and who do not intend applying for a TRNC driving licence will not be able to drive any vehicle in the TRNC once the 90 day tourist visa has expired.

If your stay is to be longer than 90 days the correct thing to do is to apply to the immigration office for a temporary residency permit. In recent years however, it has become commonplace for those approaching the end of their 90 day visa to cross a border (into southern Cyprus or Turkey) and on return get a further 90 day visa. Whilst this has worked for some, it has also been become clear that those who are deemed to have abused the tourist visa system have been issued with only a 30 day visa on their return and instructed to apply for a temporary residency permit.

If you have an accident, your insurance won’t cover you.
If you intend to make your life here, why wouldn’t you get residency and the appropriate legal driving licence?

I think butterfly is correct. Start as you mean to go on and be legal. Its the best policy here and D.L are as cheap as chips in any case.

Thanks again for the replies.
We will be registering and getting a local DL - seems the most sensible way to go.
One other quick question
I am bringing with us our Drivinging licences, marriage certificate, passports, bank account details is there any other paperwork I need to bring with us.
Thanks again

If you intend to visit Paphos would suggest that you get an international driving licence/permit from the post office before you leave the UK. seems there is a good chance that you would not be allowed to drive a car over the border from north to south after Brexit without one.
