Problem with GARANTI ATM

Be careful re the above at the K-Pet machine in Alsancak. I put my card in and the screen went black and it swallowed my UK card. I went home, picked up passport and details re Sort Code and account number and went immediately to the Garanti bank next door to Akay Optic and Deniz Plaza in Girne. All the bank needed at that time was my full name, phone number and name of my UK bank. They are trying to get it out of the ATM this afternoon but not holding out much hope and it will probably be Monday. When I do get collect the card I will have to produce passport.

According to the Garage staff the ATM is always causing problem. I mentioned this to bank staff and I got a wry smile as if they were aware!! It could have been a temporary fault and when Security/Engineers go for my card, they may put it right. Be aware though.

Be aware, the banks neither own nor maintain ATMs. They are provided via a private company.

Whatever, all I can say is Garanti told me they have made arrangements for the card to be collected from their Branch in two working days. I have to believe that.

They may charge you to hand the card back HSBC used to. Garanti atms do not like my card therefore I never use them

I wasn't charged when HSBC ATM at Supreme swallowed my UK bank card some considerable time ago, did take over a week to get the card back though.

Wouldn't be so bad, but it swallowed the card before it performed any action i.e. the screen just went blank. In the meantime, I'm keeping a regular eye on On Line Banking and relying on Garanti to do what they have said they will do.

The Supreme ATM kept my card and it cost me 70tl to get it back.

Perhaps it was my demeanour after having to travel from Tatlisu to HSBC twice, wait in long queues, after contacting the branch by telephone to ensure it was there, which they told me it was. On the 3rd attempt seeing long queues again, went straight upstairs, and refused to wait in any queue as advised, and wasn't shifting an inch until I got it. Don't suppose they would dare to ask for any money. They wouldn't have got it anyway.

It makes it a lot easier when this happens in an ATM outside or just inside the bank. In may case it was on the side of the road, which slows things up considerably.

Quite agree Sophie. After the fiasco with my card at Supreme, I always used the ATM at HSBC branch until it closed down, despite it being very inconvenient for me. Have recently got a Revolut card, which is making my life so much easier, albeit cash is needed for some things.

UK bank card returned by Garanti after 5 working days. No charge to me. They phoned to say it was awaiting collection. Problem solved.

Excellent. It's always a worry when these things happen.
