I've recently had both cataracts done and need new glasses. Can anyone recommend an optician please who is as far away from Specsavers model of business as possible? I.E. who doesn't require me to take out a mortgage for a couple of pairs of new specs. Thanks.

I used Mert Optik just down the road on the right after The George bar in Girne. Very quick and very well priced.

Do you need to have your eyes tested or do you have a prescription? If you need to have a test then you need to go to an eye clinic then go to an optician to have them made up. I got my last eye test done at Guvenir Eye Clinic in Lefkosa, tel 0392 223 6640. It used to be situated opposite the State Hospital in Lefkosa but has now moved to a new, purpose built hospital/clinic on the road to the Metehan crossing coming from Guzelyurt side. It is a busy clinic and you may have to wait a few weeks for an appointment. I then went to Akay Optic in Girne to have my glasses made up. All in all the price was quite a bit less than in the UK, particularly given the exchange rate.

There are two branches of Akay in Girne. One in town just down from the George.
The other on the road going towards the old HSBC from the Lefkosa roundabout. Personally I find the second one more efficient than the one in town. They do BRS discount as well.
If you need an eye test we use the Eye Clinic run by Dr Hatice by the Bellapais traffic lights.
