Pollution clearly visible today

Yesterday and today we have a clearly visible yellow line across the sky presumably from the Power Station on the Essenteppe Road. I presume this is what leaves the yellow dust on the car and patio table. My neighbour tells me last year it was so bad it was hurting her eyes.

Not a brilliant picture but you can see the line across the top of the 'Roman ruins' here in Catalkoy. It is far clearer to the human eye in real life.

The yellow dust covering everything and hurting your neighbour's eyes is almost certainly the pollen from the trees, flowers and shrubs at this time of year.... I'm not saying the plume of pollution from the power station is not an issue but given this time of year pollen is always a problem and this year, after such a long wet winter the pollen is really bad.

The dust fall from the power station is not yellow it's brown/black soot.

Ah well that explains it then I think. It certainly isn't pollen that is going across the sky but I accept it will be on the cars in that case.

Today’s plume reading for Kyrenia is high (83 aqi) which although high, isn't that high compared to some other countries. In general, the air of North Cyprus is quite clean.

An app that is free from the App Store called Plume. We use it these days as much as weather forecasts so that we know when it is safe to exercise outside or go to the gym.

Cheers Trigger. I haven't found a reliable weather forecast yet. Even if I find one that says we may have light showers it never says it will be throwing it down for three hours with hail stones the size of golf balls!

Notice that the pollution layer is there again today in force. Now that can't be connected to dust from anywhere other than the Power Station. Strange how you can see it some days better than others but it is quite bad again today.

The yellow line across the sky from the power station is sulphur dioxide. In any civilised country it would be illegal to have emission of this type going into the atmosphere. This is very harmful and is the cause of acid rain. All in needs to stop it is a proper exhaust stack with filters in, but they are expensive.

Very noticeable in the morning. I guess when everyone is turning their kettles on.

Take a look at Kalecik oil terminal north of Bogaz. Its worse than the power station and more-or-less constant. Yesterday afternoon it was drifting past Salamis and reaching Famagusta.
