Keeping up appearances

I was amazed to see the new Girne Belediye building. Talk about showing off, pity didn’t do something about roads, public schools etc. However much did this cost? Had to be over the top, then of course got to furnish it, great big desks to sit behind, so that the person in front looks very small.

I haven't see the one at Gonyeli, but I have seen the hellhole that is a shelter at Gonyeli, where the dogs drown when there are storms

Several of the towns/villages appear to be getting new Beleydiyesi buildings, Lapta's is still being built and very grand it is too. What a pity the rest of the place is looking so neglected and dirty, or that the roads are in a terrible state, or that the lighting on the main coastal road is totally inadequate and dangerous, but as we're only expats contributing financially to these municipalities we obviously don't even have the right to an opinion on anything.

elizabeth, of course, you 'have the right to an opinion on anything.' However, whether the TCs heed it, acknowledge it or even care about it is another matter. They will do what they see fit, despite expats views or opinions. You must either accept that fact or just stay mum. We live under the control of the Esentepe Başkan - he demands huge sums of money for water infrastructure and metering costs, is building a fantasy beach complex, but doesn't repair roads or even pay his staff for months at a time. Hey ho, this is Cyprus my friend!!!

Tom Steele,
I know that the powers that be don't take any notice of expats, my comment re opinions was in answer to the above poster, isn't that what this forum is for, so people can express an opinion over things that they feel are important to them.

elizabeth, absolutely this is what the forum is designed for. However, bemoaning TC attitudes to driving, speeding, parking, buildings, waste tipping et al, will not change one jot of how they conduct themselves compared to expat expectations of how life here should be. I do accept, though, you have the right to want change to your standards. I hope you achieve them.

I have no illusions as to what influence any expat has here in Cyprus, nor do I want or expect the TC's change their ways.In the same way that you complain on this forum about the water situation in your area then I will continue to post about things that I feel could be improved, even though I accept that it won't achieve anything, it's a bit like discussing Brexit in the pub, people do sometimes just let off a bit of steam !

I absolutely love living here and wouldn't want to go elsewhere, but know that I can't do a dashed thing about anything that I disagree with. It's not perfect by a long chalk, but don't suppose that anywhere is. We all are entitled to have an opinion, a little moan, when something gets on our nerves here. There is nothing else that we can do about it after all, so getting it off your chest is fine in my book if it helps. Would be an awful world if we couldn't voice our opinions.

Accept it or move you you say. No, I am one of those lucky ones with a voice, so I try to alter a situation with my voice and kimlik card and others do the same. Complete waste of money they could save thousands. For 7 years I volunteered at Baris home for patients with mental disabilities and tried to help and alter attitudes they used to say never had money the expats helped me raise it, so the Girne. Belediye did not have to be that grand. I love living here and have done for 40 years but I have opinions.

I remember my local council spending £75k on bike sheds! (I just put a Tesco bag on the seat!) I may also add that this was spent whilst they were waiting for approval of plans for a whole new council building!
It is not just the TRNC.
