I think I know how the system works. Just checking...….is it a case of obeying the speed limits exactly and the computer works out just how long it should have taken you to go from A to B? Or is that too simplistic.

sounds right is at how the uk system works but there's hundred yards where the speed limit drops t 65/75 your guess is as good as mine

It just times you from entering to leaving and works out your average speed. In the UK you see some people fly past the first one then hit the brakes to get down to about 30 for the second and they then hope they have fooled them. Just as easy to set the cruise control and bide your time really.
I am assuming the limit is still100kph as the sign says that as you enter but on some roads it has dropped.

It will be interesting to hear people's comments on the change in driving habits. Bear in mind most of the large Mercedes,Audi and Bmw drivers are exempt by nature of birth and employment status from fines and can ignore the cameras.

Then it will be very interesting to see the Government response and how it manages this!

What a very wide generalisation. Anyone can break the law and I have been here and seen drivers of all sorts of cars do so. How does it make it a fact that drivers of this car or that car are worse than others? I would much prefer a sensible discussion about the problems associated with the subject matter than a daft comment. Generalisation is generally wrong.

Here in the UK we have them on parts of the A12 where the speed limit is 70 mph the tolerance is 10 mph so if you do 81 mph between the cameras you will get a ticket

Interesting to read about tolerance in UK. Last year in TRNC I received a fine and points on licence for 15 months for being 3 over.

It's a great idea but I do wonder if it will actually make any difference, perhaps if the drivers caught by these cameras are given a hefty fine, or better still are taken to court if they don't pay the fine, then maybe we will in time see some positive outcome from the system. We can only live in hope.

While my post was a bit tongue in cheek the word police may not have been here long enough to appreciate it does happen often. One only has to see the disregard by some people. Also a few years ago the member of government that argued in court he was exept the rules as he was a minister. Happily today I was able to drive to Lefkosia and back without once being overtaken on the inside, flashed as a large expensive car the make I would not dare mention flashing me as he approached at over 150 kph and the wake rocking my car as he went . So well done the cameras

Sometimes a smilie helps. One of the reasons I don't like that sort of generalisation is that no one thinks they are a bad driver. especially the guy and yes in a Mercedes today who came round the corner over a narrow bridge partly on my side of the road and then blamed me for being in his way. Luckily I had stopped. Or like when I stopped in the road to not hit the guy who was backing out into the road in front of me. Sadly the guy behind didn't see I had stopped and hit me. Luckily there was no damage to my car but there was to his BMW. OK so in two instances in a matter of days I have reinforced the stereotyping but it is a sad fact of life here that the driving is generally atrocious no matter what they drive. Some are just incompetent but many are careless and dangerous and some of them it would not matter what car they were driving because they have no skills yet I bet if you were to challenge them they would say they were brilliant drivers.
I am not here to argue nor cause a fuss I just don't see the need to single out some when many are at fault.

Chris, have you ever thought "It might not be them".
Sorry, I couldn't resist that, I apologise.

No need to apologise at all. Yes I constantly assess my own driving and admit it when it is my fault. It is what I was taught to do and still do some many years later as it hopefully stops you making the same mistake again. I ride a motorbike as well and have done for years and you really do need to have your wits about you doing that. Believe me that has kept me very aware of what is going on when driving around these parts!
Keep safe out there folks.
