Extracted from links.
"Phileleftheros writes that a five-minute call from the end of Ledra street to French Guiana (French overseas department – considered EU land), 10,000 km away will cost €0.375, while a call to the Buyuk Han, just 100 metres away will cost €2.45, more than six times the price"
I didn't really expect it to be cheap rates!

It did not work on Monday from Lidl near Alphamega to the North, phone rang but could not speak as no connection after it was answered, friend tried twice. It was iPhone to iPhone do not know if that makes a difference.

Just texted the 1717 number and wrote Guney as per paper. Text back to say phone 533 to activate data roaming. Pressed for English then got a guy who said in perfect English, I don't speak English." and hung up on me.
Always found the phone works anyway from the border to the coffee shops in the Mall of Nicosia, outside and Engomi Mall and Alphamega.

I think you will find some phones are better than others I could always use my 3GS iPhone in ikea then the 4 only as far as jumbo I now have a 5 and can use it in Makarios ave as well as ikea. The beauty was it was at TRNC rates. Not yet tried since the alleged opening up of the phone lines. I assume you will get a roaming message

may be helpful to the odd person perhaps - i use my UK (Vodaphone) phone on a UK SIM only contract and its free roaming in ROC and Turkey (incl TRNC). plus i get 20 Gb a month included. It auto swithces between North and South and yes i agree not everyinne want only a UK number - but the Mobile Data is better than most providers in terms of speed and coverage island wide and all social media apps are generally used for conducting business anyway for workers/tradesmen etc. Worth a look if you have that option. Also after Brexit - the contract for roaming may change but up until then its great.

Same here. I use Turkcell and Vodaphone. Find the Vodaphone very useful and only pay approx £13.50 per month.
