Well, do you believe this, if true this will really start an uproar, with our friends in the South https://www.lgcnews.com/fatih-finds-gas ... ports-say/

Very interesting if it's true. Is 170 billion cm of gas considered a commercial sized find?

So as to visualise the amount, 170 billion cubic metres is 170 cubic kilometres. According to Wikipedia, it's about the same as the gas reserves in the UK, but Russia has almost 300 times that amount at nearly 50 000 biliion cubic metres of gas.

Is it fake news? - probably not - the Turks have now sent a 4th ship down there to have a better look ... so they certainly feel there is something there.

Thanks Crumpy!

That makes it easier to visualise.

Hi Keith - I sense a touch a sarcasm there, but my Maths students would have no idea of what 170 000 000 000 m^3 is.

Hmmm makes you wonder if they will come to regret rejecting, out of hand, Akinci's proposal to form a joint committee to work on hydrocarbons..... may be some interesting times ahead.

Oooooh!

I haven't got a sarcastic bone in my body!

Once you had pointed out that it was 170 cu kilometres, I could visualise a cube approx 5.5 kilometres on each side, or a sphere just under 7 kilometers in diameter.

That would fit comfortably between Girne and 5 mile beach...

They did well to find such a small pocket at the bottom of the sea!

Good math Keith ... as I remember you seem to like the formula for a sphere
Probably more realistic though to think of the find as a layer something like 1/4km by 20km by 34km. All speculation though, and it could indeed all turn out to be a game played by Ankara ...

Ah, that would make it a bit easier to find!

I wonder what the sanctions against Turkey by the EU will be?

Having read the newspspaper article as in discussion 1, if true the pressure is surely on the Greek Cypriots now, they were invited to share the hydrocarbon products and declined, if they now go down that road the inference may be drawn they accept the Turkish Cypriot position regarding jurisdiction on the whole island. Very interesting, let's see where Akinci takes this.

Good point Bogaz I think this has been the plan since Akinki's offered to talk. Clever statesmanship on the TC side and looks good to the UN. If it's fake news it's working.

Terry2366, appears to be a shift of thought since Ersin Tatar and the coalition government arrived, talk of inventory at the maras, now the hydrocarbons, lack of Greek willingness to enter into meaningful discussion on reunification at this stage, pressure on the UN from TRNC????
