Hi I've got a big black snake in the garden am worried bout my cats and dogs any idea how to get rid of it

Big stick or pool net and confidence. Black snakes are not venomous to humans.

We have a lot of big black snakes around us as we live next to a field. The dogs stand and bark but leave them alone, they don't approach them and the snakes sidle off. We dont mind them either and love watching them. Our son grew up with a pet corn snake in a vivarium, in his bedroom.
It was 2 meters long when it died. Our biggest black one is about 4 meters long.

Don't want to hurt it but am worried about the cats and dogs

Big black snakes are totally harmless to people or pets. If anything be worrying about your cat hurting the big black snake

They keep rats and other snakes away, including the venomous ones, so you are lucky to have one and you can rest easy that there wont be any dangerous ones around.

They like milk!

As others have said, please don't be worry about your pets. The black snakes, like all animals need water, and they come into gardens to find it. You can tell when they are desperate when they decide to have a swim. Move the dogs away if they are barking or they'll stay in the water rather than risk facing the dogs.

I have just seen a viper in our garden and am really worried for the dogs. The viper was in the garden behind us last week so it is hanging around.

We had a dog that liked to take on the snakes. She had a face like Muhammad Ali after the Joe Frazier fight twice after being bitten. The vet gave adrenalin on the first occasion I believe, and said if she survived the night she'd be OK. She did, but two weeks later she poked her head in the same bush with the same result. This time I refused to drive all the way to Girne to see the vet, but she still survived. These snakes were confronted on walks and not in our garden, where there are plenty of snakes. We turned around once on a walk to see her with a snake in her mouth, thrashing it about. On this occasion the snake came second.

Snakes are protected species here and usually turn and flee from humans and dogs, unless your dog is a nutcase like mine I wouldn't worry too much. Just be prepared for a quick visit to the vet if it does get bitten.

Can you tell the difference between a viper and 4 other species of snakes that are usually confused with vipers but are harmless to humans? Coin Snake, juvenile black snake, cat eyed snake, and montpellier snake are most commonly confused with blunt nose vipers.

One of my dogs died a horrible death because of snake bite, she received all the anti venom injections within 10 minutes of it happening but to no avail.
My friend Mick lost most of his thumb, again receiving medical attention immediately but with no success.
The vipers are dangerous, please be aware of that

Kbasat, no I can't tell the difference. Are the others venomous? I am terrified of snakes having been bitten by a non venomous snake once so even to look at pictures turns my stomach. I will however try and identify those others you mentioned. I just fear for my dogs more than anything as one of them loves to go for anything that moves.

There is only one dangerous one...

I saw this unfortunate one about 2 months ago on the road. Can someone identify it?

These two were in our garden two weeks ago, I believe the one being devoured by the black snake is a Blunt Nose Viper!

There is some very informative pictures if you Google the question there. This subject has come up a number of times so you should be able to obtain them from Kibcom "search"
