More details on bus stops proposed on road to Karşıyaka

Further to the press release, a couple of weeks ago, saying the Ministry of Transport, together with the municipalities concerned, were finalising the locations of proposed bus/dolmuş stops along the Girne-to-Karşıyaka road (see http://www.kibkomnorthcyprusforum.com/v ... 17#p236117), they have now stated that passengers will be able to see which bus/dolmuş is approaching and the estimated time it will take to arrive. The artist's impression below was chosen by Kıbrıs Gazetesi, to represent the new stops - it was not part of yesterday's press release.

The MoT etc also reiterated the statement, made in that earlier press release, that companies/drivers could lose their permits to operate if they let passengers on or off at places other than the bus stops.

Pinch of salt anybody?

Groucho, with all the money they're paying for these bus stops, they'll clearly want them to be used. But my guess though is that the drivers/companies might just be fined, not lose their permits to operate.

In any case, in message 1, I was relaying what Kıbrıs Gazetesi wrote.

What about the poor souls who insist the dolmus stops every 15 yards or so? They'll be throwing themselves off when its moving, rather than wait for an officially designated stop. I think I've seen a few of these already, but the only one that comes to mind is at Baris Park close to the water roundabout. I can picture queues of Dolmus forming at each stop. Can I see a machine to enable you to buy a ticket in advance?

One would imagine that Kıbrıs Gazetesi would have used a photo of that stop, if that had been the case.

I seem to have slightly misled you on this - the picture used in msg 1 was actually chosen by Kıbrıs Gazetesi, to, in their eyes, best illustrate the stops, that the MoT etc are planning along the road - There is nothing in the report about ticket machines.

In any case, I have just edited message 1, so as to avoid others being misled by the "artist's impression".

OooH! This is so sad. It has always been so magical with the Dolmus service. Drivers see you walking down a road and toot you. I love it, part of the culture here. Now we will have to queue at bus stops!

I bettya Heaven, the system will work for a very short time until people get fed up not being dropped off immediately opposite the shop they want. I wonder if they will have Inspectors "On the Buses type" to check the Drivers only stop in the designated areas?

Hi Sophie. We passed by the stops, you mentioned, yesterday ... and indeed they are just the standard type. One presumes the new ones will be built over the next few months.

Totally agree. What a waste of money they don't have.

I suspect that these bus stop plans are connected to the widening of the carriageway to 2 lanes each way.
What would be the point of 2 lanes if one is continuously being obstructed by minibuses stopping.
As long as the bus stops are in special laybys (off the 2 lanes) this new plan should help to keep the traffic flowing.

I'd be interested to see where these special laybys will be, I think they'll going to struggle to have the width in places to get 4 lanes in without putting them in shop car parks or front gardens.

My mother always said, if it's not broken, don't fix it! As a regular dolmus user, I like the system as it is now!
