I came home this afternoon to find two English speaking Cypriot women using my swimming pool, as soon as I challenged them as to what they were doing, they picked up their belongings from my sun loungers and left muttering underneath their breath as if I was out of place asking what the hell they thought they were doing!
I bought my home in 2003 and have only used it as a holiday home since then, that is until I moved here permanently in June. I am now wondering if this is a one off or have others been using my home all these years without me knowing it, either way I think it is a cheek.
At the time this afternoon I didn't say too much to them as I was surprised and in shock, but once bitten twice shy -- if it happens again they will feel the full force of Scouse wit ------ the brazen cheek of it, even now some hour later after a few glasses of red I'm becoming more annoyed as I think about it.
Has anyone else experienced this, or have I just been unlucky and this was a one off?

One of our not very near neighbour’s two dogs come & use our pool sometimes they really enjoy it!

Portishead Scouser, just wondering exactly where 'your' swimming pool is ? According to one of your recent posts - I live in a penthouse that has a balcony / patio / terrace which is 7.6M x 6.5M in size, with palm trees, large cactus and other shrubs in pots on it.
So just how did these people access it ?

I wonder if the Roof Top area is actually for the use of others in the block. But yes, privacy is something not accepted by some. I have known people a while back returning early from a holiday to find an extended family of nearby neighbours using not only the pool but having a BBQ as well. Under the circumstances it was a case of "if you can't beat 'em join them" ........and they did!!

I woukd presume this is a shared swimming pool in a small block of flats and they know all the owners and the tresspassers where from outside the block probably a neighbour or friends of owners . Makes more sense now as its not a pool in a fenced off villa.

I’m glad you find my posts so memorable that you can recite them back, does this mean you’re a fan of mine and that I have a follower – if so I just hope it’s not infatuation and that there won’t be a Glenn Close situation!
For your information, the pool is about 30 feet below where I’m currently sat and if the grandchildren had their way there would be a zip-wire down to it, as for accessing it – when the two ladies left they just walked out of the driveway on to the road, turned left and walked away, so I assume they also came in that way!

To stop you wondering too much. YOU ARE RIGHT, the roof top being a communal area belongs to all six apartment owners (Although only three apartments are lived in) in the block who can go up there any time they wish, sometimes believe it or not I actually go up there to check the water tank, solar panels and carry out odd bits of maintenance to the roof.
As for my balcony / patio / terrace beneath the roof, sometimes the other owners join me on it when I invite them to do so. If I was to come home and find someone sat on my balcony / patio / terrace without my permission and having not given them the keys beforehand to my penthouse door then I would consider it to be a break-in and trespass which are criminal offences – these two women using the pool is that any different.
YOU ARE ALSO right that privacy is an important thing, but I am not talking about privacy – just about the down right cheek of those who think they can do whatever they want to do regardless of it being right or wrong!

You presume too much and jump too quickly to conclusions, the pool is in an enclosed walled off garden with lots of trees, bushes and shrubs screening it from the road – it is a very small individual thing, it is not a large multi-block complex of flats. AND NO the two women were not friends or known to the other owners!

I arrived home one afternoon and a pair of swimming shorts were on the line. It was gardeners day and the following week one of the gardeners helpers took the shorts which I'd left near the line.

Not a big issue and I reckon it goes on a lot. A quiet word with the gardener and no probs since.

I guess if you are doing the pool or garden in 40 odd degrees on an uninhabited villa the temptation must be overwhelming.
But there are enough villas out here the don't see an inhabitant for 10 months of the year I find it surprising they choose one that is inhabited.

A shared pool in small block 100 % correct!
You know all the owners and therefore knew the people where not owners ! Probably correct!
Tresspassers where either neighbours or friends of owners ! probably correct its hghly unlikely people have travelled from lapta to jump in a pool in someones backyard! So neighbours.

Just to update you, today, the two women returned to the pool with a tribe of kids, so myself and the apartment owner from beneath mine (who is Turkish) went to exchange words with them – yesterday they could speak English with a Cockney twang today they understood no English and spoke to me in Turkish, however they soon realised their error once Ahmet started speaking to them in Turkish.
The older of the two women said they were staying at a friends villa which had no water in its pool and when they phoned him back in London he apparently told them he had a friend who owned an apartment complex that had a swimming pool which they could use, but they couldn’t remember the name of the apartment or exactly where it was, but by chance found my pool and decided this must be it as it was the type of place her friend would have.
I couldn’t believe then when Ahmet said because the children were in the pool and enjoying themselves that they could stay for a short while but can’t come back. The younger of the women then said in perfect English “Mum I’m not staying here with people looking at us!”
Beggars belief!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I await tomorrow.

To go back to the original post. It happens, my neighbors only come out on hols and are happy the pool is used when they are not there, I keep an eye and as long as it is not abused it is fine. The village kids use several different pools without problem, it is activity and a lot better than sitting inside playing video games.

Cyprus is a lot more relaxed and neighborly that the UK, there is not the "Get off my land" and "home is his castle" mentality that is the norm in the UK. I am not saying one is right or wrong but I quite like the relaxed community spirit we have.

it does beggar belief. you pay for the upkeep.and someone else gets,the benefit.
not a chance in my book unless I agree to it.
had the same problem when I had an apartment with a pool. neighbours kids came with their bats and balls. they then got bored with that and used stones for balls instead.
imagine the damage to the pool filters etc.

I this sad world where we appear to be rapidly destroying all the natural resources which sustain the human race and the word we live in,I question whether there is any validity in the "ownership" of an essential item, such as water. After all when Turkey provided water to make up the deficiency which mainly swimming pool owners had aggravated the price was put up for everybody whatever use we make of the water (even drinking the stuff) so you could argue that we all have a claim on some of the water in those pools!

Even with the "Turkish" water it seems there is still unsufficient supply to meet demand and or infrastructure to distribute the water. What kind of justice is it where citizens and permanent residents are unable to access water for essential purposes whilst others can sit in their ivory towers with a pool they use a few days a year for reacreational purposes can say "This pool is mine" and dont any one else dare think of using it however hot and ill they may be feeling.
