Having read the post below on another forum - lets post something positive about the trnc....

i'll start:

"Kebabs" (my missus loves them).

And it seems that there are even some in the “trnc” share Pte Pikes views.

Here’s what i read elsewhere, and quite a few agreed with him: -

Don’t worry about the litter strewn beaches, builders Ooops dumped everywhere, corrupt legal system, no direct flights, 3rd world utilities, dwindling tourist numbers, trade embargo’s, shoddily built houses, freezing winters, boiling hot summers, red tape like no other, farcical car import duty, ex-pats moaning all the time, rocketing costs (brings a whole new meaning to “we moved here cos it was cheap”, farcical immigration policy, farcical work permit policy, land stolen at gun point (we all know the GC’s will NEVER forget – but can you blame them ?), nothing to do other than drink, loaf around and eat kebabs, the lies, the cheating and the bullshit and the fact that without Turkey’s money, the place would fall flt on it’s face…..

Hardly “living the dream” – is it ?

Don’t worry – its really not that bad – its a whole lot worse

Deniz1, Paddywack,
I think you got the wrong end of the stick - Garymonger was actually trying to be positive - he quoted Jerry to show the sort of negative comments that unfortunately appear on so many forums.

Let me do my bit to be positive - looking up to the mountains while swimming in the sea around girne ...

Has anyone been to the Salamis Ruins, took the long track, to the left of the Roman Baths, leading the sea and walked along the beach back to the carpark. AMAZING!!!!

At the Global Turkish Cypriot Conference I attended last wee, one of the speakers (from Dubai) said that we really have to make the most of our assetts here. And he was right. He listed the glorious weather; the very low crime rate; the cheaper cost of liv ing than U.K. (in many respects),; the beautiful and historic sites (which Soner refers to); the friendliness of the people; the strong emphasis on family life, and one or two other things that far outweigh the negative as Garymonger put on posting one (no, I know it was not HIM who said it), and I wholeheartedly agree. I too have problems here that are unresolved, but I may well have worse elsewhere - who knows. I am here, and even though I don't like some of the changes over recent years, there is still a lot going for this place. Oh yes, the other thing is not having to fit burglar alarms , plus of course it being a small place where 'everyone knows my face'.
anyone got anything to add?

When we moved here 7 years ago, we would have posted positive comments about TRNC, or at least the hope of things to come. I am sad to say I agree with most of the thread quoted by gary-monger, apart from the weather, that is out of our hands.
We can look out of our window and see Kantara castle, the harbour , the sea. How wonderful you think? Initially yes.
Since that day in May 2005 we have experienced the sadness of animal abuse/neglect on a huge scale, the degradation of every beach near us, the dumping of rubbish/house contents and concrete lorries in our locality etc etc. The problems with beaurocracy and permits we have accepted of course, we are foreigners BUT the non acceptance of TC citizens to protect their environment and future we find amazing. What a jewel, what a promise, what are they doing? NOTHING.
Sadly, nothing has improved in 7 years.
When I asked my husband to say something positive about TRNC his answer was ' It's in the Med"
Enough said, we are leaving.

I think I must have rose tiinted glasses on.

Whilst sitting here, I see my mountain, and lapta village. Whilst washing up, I see the Med.
My grandson can play in the street without me having to worry that he'll be abducted.
My neighbour always greets me with a smiley face, and sometimes a fistfull of fresh veg.
I sit in my back garden with my front door left open. Often forget to lock my car.

I walk to my local shop, often pass youngsters, but never hear foul language or feel
threatened. I can talk to a child without fear of being pulled up for being too familiar.

One evening I was walking to meet a friend, a couple of youths pulled up beside me and asked
if I was OK. Again, I didn't feel threatened, they just asked if I needed help, or a lift.

I could go on and on, yes we have proceedures to follow for our temp. residency etc., but heck,
it gives us something to do. Yes, we've had hiccups, but I just try to smile and call it sunshine tax.

To be honest having lived north and south much of the negative comments in the original posting could; if you were that type of person, be seen as very true. What was posted is happening all over the island and for that matter all over the med. However; it really very much depends on your outlook on life as to how much you focus on the negatives. Yes there are things which annoy just a little, but there is such a lot that makes the TRNC such a wonderful place to come to. We love the weather of course, the food, the way of life, the people, the strange way things get done...or not sometimes ( ), the helpfulness of most we meet, the scenery, feeling safe, the beaches, sitting outside at night, people watching in Girne harbour front, going out for a meal and being offered a free lift home, Efes, the Karpas area, exploring the villages, Bellapais village of an evening, being able to relax and chill out....and so much more.

We have been fortunate to spend many holidays on the island and we have in the past few years introduced many friends to the TRNC. Most had done the normal holiday destinations but never considered north Cyprus. We would ask if they wanted to come with us and experience the real Cyprus...we warned them to look beyond the odd pile of rubble and sometimes litter....its a state that has had little opportunity to grow, is not recognised, has had no investment and the infrastructure struggles at times....but for 37 years it has survived and grown albeit slowly. Every single one of our friends have come away from the TRNC with very fond memories and we are very happy to have been able to share our love for the place with them.

Its all to easy to get dragged down if you are that way inclined - for us we love the place and always will.

Totally agree with you PoshinDevon.
No matter where you are in the world, you will find fault if you look and it can get you down if you let it. I sometimes get wound up in Cyprus by some things but equally with things I disagree with in the UK, but do not let it get to me, goes right over my head. I love Cyprus and to be totally fair I love the UK too. Would not be able to choose one over the other.

flowerfairy and PoshinDevon. You both sum up the place beautifully. I love North Cyprus, warts and all. I first came here 11years ago, my first holiday abroad, and I couldn't wait to come back. Maybe it is the 'atmosphere'.

I live here permanently but have visited other places, all very nice but I love to come home, North Cyprus captured my heart and I feel that this is where I belong.

flowerfairy, I don't think you are looking through rose tinted glasses. I personally think the people returning to the uk may be wearing them, lets hope they won't be too shocked when they remove them.

Nice to see the positive people are out today....

Litter - a problem in North Cyprus, yes...but strangely enough driving around the UK, especially on the motorways the litter problem is really bad. I blame the cuts but to me I have really noticed it in the last year or so.

It happens all over the world.

yes Andrew, in Australia they are known as whingeing Poms, and now some of them are here. But looking at the |Mail this week and seeing pictures of the devastation caused by the rain,(in the middle of a hose pipe van), then I know where I would rather be. Yes, we had some rain last year that was a bit unkind to rather a lot of people, but the good far outweighs the bad.
I miss my culture, but I could not afford it now, ; I miss my family, but they are dead, so I am a great believer in making the best of what one has when one has it, and the TRNC offers a lot of what I like. I don't want to be a whingeing Pom, especially as I have lived in Australia.
Think positively, be positive, and live positively., and positively be happy.

Hi, I am new to the forum. I have read the forums for years but never wanted to get involved in them, as so many people use them to be judge and jury. Having followed this one from the beginning, I finally think I have found somewhere safe and somewhat sane. I think the TRNC has a lot going for it. The sun, sea, mountains, birds and flowers. It is small and beautiful. There are few places in the world I could afford to have a detached house with my own pool with spectacular views included. There are problems here, but there are problems with any country. Nowhere in this world is perfect, except perhaps somewhere the human race has not set foot. The main problem I see here is that people are trying to change it and make it all things British. It's Cypriot and it's in the Med let's all leave it that way and enjoy.

After 26 years here I would not want to be anywhere else. I go to UK to see family but always good to be back. Of course this place isn't perfect - where is. At least our litter can be picked up, drive about Heathrow Airport and see the illegals living under the motorway bridges. Love to see the kids here going shopping or to school by themselves - not being dropped off in cars to school and they live less than half mile away. Lots of changes - but the positives in my book outweigh the negatives.

Totally agree with you Zarafet re the forum, and North Cyprus. There are so many beautiful things here to enjoy. I think a lot of people have become disillusioned because they thought they could change everything, make it into a little england, but with sunshine.

I have embraced the culture, in my little part of the village there are no villas, my neighbours are all Cypriots and Turkish I can see the sea and the mountains and I can take leisurely walks along lovely country lanes.

The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, I love it just the way it is
