Many wild cats feed at our house and yesterday we caught and took an unwell looking tom to the vets. The tom tested positive for cat AIDS and on advice of the vet was put down. We have six live in cats and didn't want any wild or our domesticated cats to be infected.

unfortunately a lot of cats here are carriers or have aids but its not until they become old, or ill through other injuries the symptoms show you they have it. You mentioned a tom therefore I expect he has been fighting for queens and territory and his immune system very low.

Its so sad as they do not asked to be born.

It is contagious and I would certainly get your live in cats tested, just to be on the safe side.

Yes all of our other cats have been tested and are OK thanks Sophie including the two new kittens that have now taken up residency in our house

If you have all your cats neutered they are unlikely to catch FIV the cat version of HIV.
This is because neither cat will have a desire to mate or fight.
Fiv cats can live long lives, quite healthily.
If you have feral cats near you contact KAR to see if they will come and do a TNR programme by you.

Only if fighting or mating.
FIV and non FIV cats can live happily side by side if they are all neutered.
Feline leukaemia is contagious.

OMG i didn't even realise there was such a thing. The property we're completing on end of September in Esentepe has a "resident" cat which the current owners provide for. Is there no immunisation against this? Poor things.

There is no vaccination for FIV. There is a vaccination for feline leukaemia, cat flu and panleukopenia.
If he is neutered, he’s unlikely to catch FIV and if he’s not speak to KAR about a voucher to get him neutered.

Many thanks Misswolves, i'll certainly ask questions when we get out there on 29th. Our cat in UK has all the other vaccinations you mentioned so maybe if our vet didn't say, perhaps you can't get FIV over here.

While i'm here, i was just wondering, (looking at your forum name), what pets you keep

We have one of our cats which has FIV, the others as far as we know are negative. However, they all go out and have more chance to catch it off a stray if they fight than our cat. The one with FIV is 5 now and shows no symptoms at all, she may never actually contract the disease, but carries it.

Ah yes that sounds very familiar, though we've not yet had the pleasure of meeting the one in TRNC as he / she was not there when we came out on viewings. Don't even know it's name and not seen a picture either.
