I have read somewhere that you can now pay your road tax online. Does anybody have the web page address for this? Has anybody used it?

Not going to try this until I get my car weighed in again - the official Toyota weight is under 1500Kg but mine is "Surprisingly" just over the limit to make it into the top weight bracket!!

Hi waddo, can a car get re-weighed? Mine is just over 1500kg, so Tax is ridiculously high. I thought once weighed that was it.

For your info - the link on the Govt website does not appear to be working at the moment, despite the fact that it is supposed to be operational 24/7.
I await an email answer from the ministry about this...!

Soner, apparently so! First you need the specifications sheet for your particular vehicle which must come from the dealer - that sheet will show the weight of the vehicle. Then you can take the vehicle to the Govt weigh-bridge and show them the sheet and request your vehicle be weighed again. After you get the result from that you can go to the tax office and have your logbook changed to reflect the correct weight. Thereafter when you tax your vehicle you should pay road tax at the correct weight instead of the weight that was "guessed" at the time of original registration.

I have that information from a motor dealer who regularly comes across the wrong weights in log books and has had them changed! As soon as I can get the official specification sheet from Toyota I will begin this process. It must bear the dealers stamp on it by the way!

Many years ago in the UK, when the firm that I worked for took delivery of a new van, we took one of the seats out before taking it to be weighed

Empty the screenwash bottle, and don't go with a full tank of petrol!

Spare tyre, tool kit, jack (dodgy, asking for a puncture these are), the curb weight of my vehicle is given as 1496kg but the log book gives it as 1524! I AM going to have it checked again!!! The difference in road tax is around 700TL a year!

I have exactly the same issue. Can't be right as it is a small car.

Getting rid of spare tyres by manufacturers was mainly about saving weight. Having a can of gunk in your car is no good when the tyre splits and leaves you at the side of the road without a spare though.

Where can I see this weight list Waddo please?

After a bit of hunting I found a list but not sure if it is up to date. My car is registered as 1400kg and the Internet gives that model as 1225kg. Something like 200tl difference if I worked it out correctly.

Chris, you need to go to the dealership for your make/model and get printed confirmation of the curb weight from them first. The internet gives out all sorts of weights for vehicles but you need it from the official dealer here on their paperwork. After that it is the same as the above. I will post more when I get it all together but it is much harder than residency to get it sorted - lol.

Don't forget that the total weight includes a full tank of fuel.

pc4854, looks like you have done this before if you know that bit? Did you have a full tank - of did your fuel gauge just say you had - lol?

Finding the correct ‘kerb weight’ is a bit of a minefield:-

The general assumption is that ‘Kerb weight’ is the total weight of a car with standard equipment, a full tank of fuel and all necessary consumables (e.g., motor oil, coolant, etc.), but not loaded with passengers nor cargo.

However it does vary from model to model, and the year of manufacture, not the year of registry. Manufacturers will quote their figures, but you have to know what criteria they used.

Additionally the weight varies with the different level of standard equipment sold with each model, which may be more than the manufacturers quoted ‘kerb-weight’ figures, before ‘point of sale) so if you go for a re-weigh, don’t be surprised if its more than that quoted in your log book.

Additionally each model has a different list of equipment depending on where it was assembled/registered. Many EU manufacturers include a driver (=75 kg), while others use fixed levels of fuel and other variables to equalize the value for the comparison of different vehicle kerb weights. Also a gallon of diesel is about one pound heavier than a gallon of petrol.

Another complication is that an imported car may be first registered in the imported country, not the country of manufacture, and any additional equipment added before sale/registry (e.g. sunroof, electric pack etc.) which you as a second owner may have assumed as standard, may not be included as part of the kerb-weight on the registration document.

A car V.I.N. (as used in UK) will only show the figures at the time of manufacture, for a specific model. It does take into account any extras fitted after it leaves the factory. Some of the Asian manufacturers use the same criteria, but many export models usually end up weighing more when they arrive in the country of import, to comply with each country’s laws.

So before you start the ‘paper trail’ it may be worth paying for an unofficial re-weigh to see if there is any large difference that will make it worthwhile.

Anyone managed to pay their road tax on line? It seems it can’t be done from a mobile (at least an iPhone) since the link doesn’t appear. Tried it from my PC and it says the vehicle isn’t registered on the system, even though I did reply to the mysterious text which came a while ago and received an acknowledgement.

The only thing that was confusing in the questions asked was “date of registration” or something like that. Tried both the date of my last road tax and the date of first registration of the car.

Might it be that the current tax doesn’t run out until the end of January but I would have thought it would still let me query the status of the vehicle?

For the record it worked perfectly for me at the beginning of this month (February 2020) when I wasn’t in the country and used a non-TRNC credit card.
