I see merit hotel have announce unpaid leave for 1 month . Leaving its workers completely financially stranded. No doubt other hoteliers will follow suit . I was reading bits about the government paying a slice of peoples salary but that doesnt seem to be happening.

How will people eat ? Most live month to nonth hand to mouth already.

Seems to me either those of us who can will step up and offer support, individually or communally via 'the state' or they will not eat.

You can pretty much guarantee that when the dust settles they all wont be taken back.

It’s not just the hotel workers. The gardener of our site has been stopped from working for almost 2 weeks now and is not receiving any payment.

To be honest, I am quite worried myself about my future employment.

This is massive. It is effecting everybody. Very tough times ahead unfortunately.

Yesterday, for the first time in three years I've been here, I saw a decent looking lady asking for money near the Şokmar market

I don't know what we can do personally when we don't know how long this will last or how it will affect us in the long term...

Many hotel workers will be used to it they dont get regularly paid anyway.

Thinking of these people and others who are now not receiving wages I would like to see supermarkets having large charity donation boxes in their stores. For most people it would be no hardship buying a few extra essentials for these people!

Some of the supermarkets have places you can leave supplies for people in need to take. I think Atakara and some Starlings do it.

Yes the Mayor of Alsancak saw this system somewhere and tried to make it happen a few months ago but it died a death. You buy some food, bread and pasta etc put it in a supermarket bag and then hang on the hooks which are erected outside for people to remove. It worked for a few days at Atakara but then stopped. I'd like to see ALL supermarkets and small corner food shops, start the process off again without hesitating, but not necessary charity boxes as it would be almost impossible to monitor and by whom. People want their food today and tomorrow, not at some time in the future. You also have to reply on peoples honesty.

Alsancak Belediyesi introduced donation points at Supermarkets some time ago.

I've never seen any donations at any of them, and I confess that, although I've had the occasional impulse to leave something, I've not actually done so.

Has anyone done better?

Apologies to the two previous posters, I started to write a reply, got distracted, wandered off, and generally 'lost the plot!

Actually KC, I did see a few bags hanging up with bread in (this was a couple of months back) and next day one had gone completely and the other was ripped open. Possibly by hangry dogs? Who knows. I think its a feasible idea of the Mayor, but not logical the way it was being implemented at the time.

It would be good if all the supermarkets got in on this and had very clear places where we could make a contribution.
Times are hard but it isn't beyond many of us to contribute a bag of rice and a couple of tins of tomatoes rather than complain that they saw someone who couldn't be classed as an essential worker going out to try and earn a few lire to feed their family

From what some of the hotel workers have told us is, they will be fed and have their accommodation but no salary, these are cleaners etc, not sure if they will be treating croupiers or pit bosses and management the same way, quite sad actually that they are allegedly disposed of so easily

I have seen a memo sent to workers from another hotel saying they are awaiting clarification of the government package to be announced in the next 24 hours before they can make a decision on salaries etc.

I had previously read a few turkish articles which inferred the government would step in and pay a proportion of salaries for employees . This seemed at odds with merit lefkosia hotel giving everyone a months unpaid leave and hence my initial post. Have to wait and see what transpires.

Unfortunately trnc cant print money or lower interest rates and is relying on aid from turkey who is already in recession.

So much of the economy is reliant on tourism its hard to see the wood for the trees at the moment . Its likely things will be better at some point maybe 3 Months to a year clearly depending on the virus.

If it lasts longer than three months its Not looking good.

Local bank as in Cyprus or Turkish bank?

Is anyone that’s not working actually still getting paid? I would be very interested to know this.

It has been reported that Turkey has provided 72 million TL to the TRNC to help during this crisis. I think it remains to be seen if any of this money or any other is or will reach those with the most pressing need for help.

One of the turkish articles i read was saying they may have to reduce some of the higher public service salaries to part subsidise private employees.

Lapta Belediye have posted a plea on their facebook page, I enquired about helping and got the following message;

Across from Flippers Hotel there is the market called Bestmar. We are accepting help as payments. We are preparing 50TL help packages. You may go this market and find Mrs.Canan or Mr.Serdal and you may make payment and receive a receipt. Thank you very much for your help, much appreciated as there are many families applying to us and they have children. So if you have friends that may help please let them know also..
