New overhead cameras

I have been told that the new overhead cameras that have started to appear are not speed cameras but face recognition cameras. Not sure if its true.

Both, they are

supposed to recognise number plates for car tax evasion.

It's the same in the UK. If you don't pay your tax you get caught on camera. It will free up the police for some serious coffee drinking and extra smoke breaks.

If the car is not taxed, insured, or owned by the driver who is underage, has no licence and no money and is 'connected' then it's a real money spinner..err... not. Being caught on camera is one thing actually doing something with the data - now there's the rub.

Are they actually going to be switched on, or will it be on "a need to know" basis as with a lot of the other cameras.

A plan is also in place to install an X-ray device at customs and ports to scan vehicles.

I suppose when you are looking for customers you do need to know they are going to bother paying you
