Nine people flew from Antalya to Ercan on Friday for technical studies regarding the proposed Lapta Marina before leaving on Sunday.

Has anyone got views about the proposed Lapta Marina?
Mine are mixed.

I have always been a big fan of the Lapta Coastal Path and we use it for exercise walking most mornings before breakfast.
However we have noted with disappointment the failure of Lapta Belediyesi to maintain it during the last few years, with the exception of one dedicated employee who every morning at sunrise empties all the bins and picks up all the empty beer bottles, cans and food packaging left by those too lazy to bin them or take them home. A lot of EU money was supplied in the form of a grant to construct the first half of the path together with the railings. The second half was funded, I think, by Turkey but the build quality was inferior especially the railings on the three bridges which are now so rusted that they are possibly past any chance of renovation and probably need complete replacement with better quality ones at a high cost. And, of course, Lapta never did join up the two halves.

So, if they cannot finance the upkeep of their much heralded coastal path how can we be sure they can finance, build and operate a marina with deep water anchorage for cruise liners that would offload passengers who want to see the sights of Girne etc?
(there is already one large unfinished hotel along the path that has been abandoned for at least four years).

Where would the money come from?
Would it ever make a return on investment and operate at a profit, unless it is just a money laundering operation?

Does the country need another marina when the one in the Karpaz is barely half full and there is a new one at Les Ambassadors Hotel in Girne?
The last Lapta muhtar had a plan for a cable car from the coast to the monastery in Karsiyaka but that was just pie in the sky and died. Is the marina part of a dream to make Lapta the Monte Carlo of the Eastern Med?

So how can they justify a huge marina?
How would it affect the turtle breeding areas on the nearby beaches?

Having said all that, if it was all done professionally with the planned hotel and restaurants it could transform the area, create jobs and be of interest/benefit to those living in the community.

Surely before any new development is allowed the existing half built hotels (four I can think of in the vicinity) should be completed or pulled down. Perhaps make it part of the agreement

Its a massive investment and takes 10years at least from start to finish . The one in Karpas was in pipe line for 15years then 10 to build so dont hold your breath some of wont be around to see it

Just wonder if this is a cunning plan to avoid building a proper road system - you just need to buy a boat instead and then you can motor on up there faster? It would be nice to see but I don't think I have enough years left, still, good luck with the project and I hope it works.

I'm still waiting for the cable car from Girne to Hilarion Castle.

What about the 14 storey hotel in the centre of Girne which would have a triple life size statue of Cleopatra on the top. C2D had a virtual picture of it if you want to check on the archives. It was to be over the road from what was the HSBC. Bonkers

I would be in favour of the marina if it was built quickly and well. It would be nice to see a few more vessels in the sea and if the infrastructure includes a few more bars and restaurants, then hey-ho.

Does anybody know if any plans are available for public viewing at the Belediyesi? My trips up there are infrequent but it may be worth a visit as living on Sardunya Sokak I could be directly affected by any proposed access.

It's all off now, apparently. They got peed off at being criticized for flying in on a private jet with no covid testing, so have put their fingers up and said you can stick your Lapta marina (or words to that effect).

frontal man there is only one company in Turkey which is capable of building marinas that's DSI the same company that built the dam at Gecikoy.
They have built all the large harbours and marines in turkey.

There is also STFA - a Turkish company established by a Cypriot. They have been responsible for much harbour and marina construction in Turkey and abroad. One of Turkey's oldest off-shore companies.

It doesn't sound as though they would have seen the project through to a successful conclusion does it? If they throw their toys out of the pram the minute they come under scrutiny . I don't believe for one minute they had any real intention of major investment. That's not the way real business is done. Seems more like smoke and mirrors.
