Be aware when Payment by Transferwise or Revolut

Be aware, at 3 difeerent locations, when shopping/buying items, we have when using the payment terminal, also known as a Point of Sale (POS) terminal, credit card terminal, machine, been billed as a total amount in TL, then upon having entered the pin number for the card, the screen then shows the payment in GBP's.
On the first occasion, we thought an error by the till person. payment was processed. exchange rate TL to GBP was significantly less than the current rate. not a huge amount but its a question of principle. But after the 3rd different shop, seems to be a trend.
My pin number is entered for an amount in TL, therefore I expect to pay in TL, not at a poor exchange rate.

İLELİ Plus do seem to have got the message now.
The other day I said to the young lady on the till "I want to pay in Lira please", she said "of course", and when I checked the card payment receipt against the till roll printout, they were both the same as the till display.
I will continue to insist on Lira, and continue to check!

Just for info I have recently made purchases on Transferwise card in Lemar, Starling, Hoş Beş, Gül market, Kelebek pharmacy, Garfield's, Ileli, Sparks Yapı and Silver Rocks and all transactions have gone through in TL without any issues.

So even though you see the total in TL and do you pin number it can still tuck you up on the stg conversion?
Is there anyway of ensuring that this can't happen or are you relying on the assistant?
I only ever have a TL balance on my Revolut, will that help?

Ejs
Press the green button before you give machine back to assistant.

Hold on to the terminal after you input your pin - if it prints out a receipt then no problem but if it asks a question then tell the cashier you want to pay in TL. The cashier normally presses the red button to cancel the DCC but I wouldn't swear that works on all terminals.
I don't think it matters what currency you have, it detects foreign card and offers a choice of TL or some other currency (in my case USD). If TL isn't selected then it does the DCC at a less optimal rate plus charges 3% commission the privilege. Your currency card provider then converts that currency to your home currency, if not the same. I got charged in USD, converted by the machine to TL, then Revolut converted to GBP...
It's only happened on TEB card machines for me, as someone else mentioned Cardplus machines seem to be OK.
JoandJelly, if they use the 'right' machine it will try this with any foreign card so beware.

Would it not just be best to withdraw cash and use that... or is cash not really used now because of COVID?

I always do that anyway. So that’s the trick then?

It’s more a case that as part of the Revolut deal you can only draw £200 a month out in cash so you tend to use the card whenever possible.
It has got to the point where I have become those people in the U.K. that used to infuriate me. 4 students in a coffee bar, together but insist on paying separately for their coffees by debit card. With me seething behind them, “its £8 FFS can’t any of you get in a round or at least have £2 in cash?”
Nowadays it all I can do not to buy a paper on my card

I'm pretty sure that the question comes up after you input your pin and press the green button. Test the theory out in Şah. Ask them to use the TEB machine but tell them you want to pay in TL then see what happens. I've watched them twice

Another one putting hands up here in being that same impatient person, but pay practically everything by card unless really small amounts, or if only able to pay by cash.
Must admit that I have been lucky so far in not being stung by using Revolut card, but at least now I am aware what to look out for.

Thank god I thought it was just me ranting, "who doesn't have a fiver in cash, the Queen probably carries a fiver in cash?"

I have been in this situation where on handing back the machine it has converted to sterling but on both occasions they have asked me to put my pin number in again so was able to decline and use a different card. Both times it was in restaurants and was before this issue had been brought up here.
