Reservoir Update?

Post by Butterflyaway »

Went past on Saturday and the reservoir is looking very low.

I have looked for any updates on how the pipe repair work is progressing, but cannot find anything.

Does anyone have some news?

Thanks

Reports in local press that it will start to be filled from the middle of September.

If i remember correctly it was first mentioned that the repair would made after an investigation and would take 3 months from the beginning of January. Then the repair would be started in early July and would be completed by the end of July. Then the completion date was put back to the end of August and now mid September. Looking at the picture they are running out of time.

Cypriot pal of mine told me an hour ago that repairs will be complete by the 17th September. Apparently there were two breaks in the pipeline, not one. I feel sorry for all the wildlife in the reservoir that will or have already perished.

You are welcome. It will be lovely to see it filling up again. I just hope the Lapta belediyesi switch back to the Turkish water quickly as the local ground water is too full of calcium.

Yes but we're talking excessive levels which can cause health problems.

Does anyone have any info ( accurate ) on when the pipe under the sea will be repaired and able to give water again? We are being told in Esentepe that there is now no water being delivered through the Turkish water pipes and because the reservoir is so low the Beli cannot give us any water. If the situation is this dire then even tankers are going to have problems getting water?

Please see my post above. Not 100% accurate, I know, and God knows how long the water will take to come through once the pipe is fully repaired and tested. They won't need to refill the reservoir before they pump water into the system, but hopefully they will trickle feed the reservoir until they can allocate a fuller flow. As we've all been using the Turkish water, the ground water levels should be up, even in Esentepe, so should not be a problem with water deliveries apart from the fact that they will be very busy.

With all the water restrictions now in place in various areas of the country i was wondering if anyone has an update on the state of affairs with the Turkish water pipeline? I heard a few days ago that the repair was complete and that the dam was getting re filled. But we all know what rumours are like over here. Has anyone been around the dam in the past few days? and if so does it look like the water level is rising?

Am sure I read somewhere that the water will start flowing to households from 25th Sept.

My TC neighbour, who seems to be in the know, says the water will start coming to the reservoir on 25th but will take three weeks to fill. Few more weeks yet of shortages I think.

Just as a matter of interest for me and may others, who decides whether water is destined to be for household use and consumed, against water for agricultural and animal use. And another point, who decides whether peoples well water is suitable for household use.

What with all of the water shortages in North Cyprus this summer, it kind of makes not being able to visit a little bit less painful. Not sure I could cope without regular showers and being able to flush the toilet.

Sophie, I think you will find that water from the dam - when it starts to flow again - is just that, it is water for either household or agricultural use. It may be that the water intended for household use is subjected to further attention in the same way that the well water in use at the moment is treated. Private wells are a different matter and it is up to the owner to ensure that the well water they use is free from harmful contaminates! I have a well and use the water from it for washing, garden watering and just about everything apart from consumption. I have it checked on a regular basis as the Beli supply is totally inconsistent and can be turned off for weeks at a time. The last time I had it checked I provided two samples, one from my well and one from the meter side of the Beli supply. The well was fit for consumption but I was advised not to use the second sample for consumption at all!

I was told some time ago that the reservoir water is agricultural and the domestic water comes directly into the system from the Turkish water. Obviously with the supply from Turkey being cut we have had to rely on the reservoir but in normal times that, as I understand is for agricultural use.

I have a tap which comes directly from the mains and I use that for drinking water without issue.

I never drink the tap water here. Sometimes the local Belediye's switch to their own supply as there is more profit for them. You do not know which supply is coming through your taps at any one time.

My understanding is that it is the responsibility of each Municipality (Belediye) to test and treat water entering the local distribution system ro ensure that it is potable.

Occasionally, a Belediye may issue a warning if abnormalities are detected.

Every dwelling is supposed to have one tap connected directly to the Belediye supply for use as drinking water - akthough many don't.

If the water is subsequently stored in your house tank (depot) then it is unlikely to remain potable!

Eeeeeeeeeeek, we have no option than to drink what goes into our two tonne tanks because that what comes from the Belediye mains in the street. I suppose we should use more water on a daily basis to keep the water fresher? And here's me trying to be careful with the stuff!!

Keith, quite true and remembering back to the late 60's/early 70's every house did have a separate "Drinking Water" tap, this tap came direct from the mains and was supplied by the "Supposedly" clean and drinkable water. The reason you never drank from a non direct mains fed source because the water had been stored in a metal tank and could not be proven to be drinkable and safe! It was a good idea that I understand still operates in the South but I never trusted it even then - lol.

The "On Base" water supply was drinkable wherever you were as it was treated again before being piped around the buildings but if you lived "Off Base" in a hiring, like most people did due to the lack of married accommodation available - my then wife and I were offered a married quarter two months before the end of our three year tour, lol - your moving in instructions gave you the above information as well.

Then, like now, we only drank bottled water but used the rest for everything else (not ice cubes or salad washing) that we needed water for. Good old days.

I remember when we moved into our house here in Alsancak, I asked the builder about the other tap was in the corner of the kitchen sink," its for water from the mains for you to drink" . Like an idiot I took him at his word and we walked off. Two days later I turned on the tap....no water. I looked under the sink and discovered the tap was just for show, nothing more. Despite many phones calls and many promises, the spare tap was never connected and I had it removed eventually.

No so sure. Locals in Geçitkale don't drink the tap water, and the local belediye do refills for the 19lt bottles. I do have a tap connected to the mains, but only use for washing veg etc..

I have just had a new kitchen fitted, the new tap has two functions 1 mains water 2 drinking water.
The drinking water will be supplied from a Hyundai water purifier so we can do away with our water machine.

Keith. I had water on Thursday. About 8 tons. It’s off for three, then on for part of one. It’s been like that for at least two weeks. So it should be off Tue, Wed, Thu, then on again this Friday.

Maybe it’s the workmen opposite. (>:)(

Thanks for that, it's slightly bizarre in that the water meter reading this am was the same as the figure on the last bill, dated 10 days ago, and the water in my tank seems to have just consistently gone down until today...

Ah well, this is Cyprus! :)

Perhaps the man mis-read the meter, and I've not noticed the tank filling up occasionally :)

It’s strange that your bill was dated ten days ago when mine was dated 17/09/2020!

However, they mistakenly put in my opening reading 50 tons less than my last closing reading!

All sorted with a little visit.

That may be a bit optimistic, Soner, as the pipe will be filled with sea water and needs to be flushed out. I think it will be into October before the water is flowing as it was before. I think Mrs Gee's estimate of three weeks to fill the reservoir is even more optimistic, the Turkish water will be pumped directly into the grid distribution system initially before any is diverted to refill the reservoir. The reservoir is only a backup for the system, as we found out this time.

The water supply project covered by sea from Turkey has been repaired.
Dursun Oğuz, Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said that the last pipe will be installed tonight and water will be supplied to the system as of Monday.
The work in the open sea was interrupted due to the storm that occurred whilst the work was being done. Although it was previously stated that water would come on September 25, the storm prevented it.
Despite the 3 day delay, the works are expected to be completed this evening and the water flow from Anamur to the TRNC is expected on Monday.
The water that will be supplied to the system on Monday will start to flow as clean water in homes after being treated. After treatment, the water supplied to the dam will be collected for agriculture.
The water in Geçitköy Dam completely finished as of yesterday due to the malfunction lasting for months. State Hydraulic Works stopped drawing water from the pond as of yesterday. Municipalities are trying to provide water to citizens through their own means.

Water Supply From Turkey Delayed by Bad Weather
Pipeline.jpg
Vessels Laying Pipe

Adverse weather conditions have delayed the repairs to the undersea water pipeline which runs between Anamur, Mersin and the Gecitkoy Reservoir in North Cyprus. The date for completion has been amended from 25 September to 29 September, the General Directorate of the Turkish State Hydraulic Works has announced. Meanwhile, local communities have been facing problems over water shortages this summer after the Turkish water supply was cut off eight months ago.

Strong winds and big waves have delayed completion of the project. It was reported that winds reaching 34 kts and waves three metres high caused a loss of four days work.

Between 17-20 September, vessels working in the area at night had to leave and take shelter in a bay. Yesterday, in 30 kts of wind, vessels laying pipes went on standby to protect the pipes which were lying on the surface.

Weather conditions are expected to improve today and work should resume.

Meanwhile, communities have been struggling with water shortages. Tanker drivers have been working into the middle of the night to supply domestic residences with water. Tanker Manager Ahmet Hoca said it had been stressful because there were not enough tankers to fulfil demand.

Since the water supply was cut off from Turkey after storms damaged piping lying around 250 metres deep undersea and eight kilometres off the Mersin coast in January, local municipalities have scrambled to repair piping and pumps which have fallen into disrepair having been made redundant by the water supply from Turkey which came on stream in 2015.

Put back till Friday due to adverse weather conditions, unable to work for more than 3-4 hours.
Then the air has to be purged, I wonder if they will be charged for air the same way that we are by the belidere?
