Flashing Lights

Can someone tell me why Police and recovery tucks drive around with beacons flashing on their vehicles. I was driving around an island this morning and a Police car approached from the other direction with its lights flashing so I instinctively stopped, but he also stopped and waved me on !!!

Also, I had a brief period driving a Recovery truck we were only allowed to use beacons at the scene of an accident or breakdown or when towing a second vehicle on a spec-lift. Here they drive around with them on all the time.... Ah !! just thought perhaps they don't know how to switch them off.

Police lights on when they are on duty. Just to let people know that they are on duty. I had similar issue years back, he was surprised I stopped for no reason.

So when the lights are off they are on a "Jolly" or off for a Kabab?

As far as I know. Lights on means on patrol.

I passed a car the other day (during daytime) that had lights blazing under its front number plate which was impossible to see or read. I may be wrong but can only think it was there to defeat the cctv system fitted around town.
