The 25th of December is just a normal day in the TRNC so why would they not carry out normal planned works?

The Christmas before we left UK there was a planned power outage in our local area from 06:00 to 13:00 on the 25th of December due to “essential” maintenance, we got the power back at around 14:00 on the 27th of December! They had finished the maintenance in record time but forgot to turn us back on again! Nothing new in the World, you just learn to live with it.

Not for my advocate over there it is not. Not back until some time in January... when the tax on title deeds returns to 3%

It’s all very well you making excuses for them but it is not a normal day. They know full well that it’s a special day for those expats from many countries who reside here and help their country to keep afloat via taxes. Surely there are other ‘normal days’ when this work could have been done?
I don’t really want to be cynical but cannot, in this instance, help it.

There is no need for me to make any excuses. The TRNC is a predominantly Moslem state and as such the 25th December is a normal day.

Ex Pats of whatever country are guests in the TRNC and therefore should accept and embrace its culture.

Would companies in the U.K. suspend work digging up a road, power outages, water pipe repairs or such like just because the Indian, Jewish or whatever communities were celebrating a festival? I think not.

I agree but if they decided to implement power cuts in the Chinatowns in the U.K. on Chinese New Year it would attract a lot of justified criticism.
It does seem a bit thoughtless if it is a non emergency
I just think it’s a shame for those restaurants for who it might have screwed their chances of getting a rare full restaurant this difficult year.

I couldn't agree more. Some of these replies are cringeworthy. We have not had a power cut or a planned power cut for weeks if not months, now they choose Christmas day. They are either thick or just insensitive to the needs of expats who will spend most of the day preparing the dinner or having social distancing friends around. I hope those infected do not have their day ruined.

I agree Mollie The Cat and Brazen there is no excuse for this planned cut. If this happened in the UK for other religions than Christians the media would be over it like a rash. You can be assured that the Utilities in the UK are extremely sensitive to 'special days' for minorities.

It’s good to read that we all do not agree. That is what makes for interesting reading and discussion on this forum.

I still don’t understand why a Moslem state should be considering not doing work on the 25th December as it really is just another day.

TRNC is NOT a Muslim State, It is secular unlike the UK where the head of church is also head of State!

Posh you just dont get it! Its the work they chose to carry out that is the issue here. Most ex pats do comply and embrace the culture, some employ locals as gardeners, pool cleaners Etc, and we all contribute in one way or another to the economy. Surely someone who makes these decisions has realised that Christmas day is one of if not the most important day in the calendar for ex pats.

Tomorrow I am the cook, I have everything prepared for the oven, the last thing I want is a power cut at any time! No oven no hot food, from past experience these "cuts" rarely stick to a time, already I have no idea when the power will be cut in my area, what a real pain! What did you say, lets embrace the culture do you mean all of it? Dangerous driving, filth and crap everywhere, locals not sticking to Covid rules, animals chained up day and night barking all night Etc Etc, yeh lets embrace the lot!

26 (?) Bishops in the House of Lords ex officio?

Final choice of two nominees for the appointment to a Bishopric by the Prime Minister of the day.

Not quite a total separation of Church and State.

While it is (sadly) an inconvenience to us (so proud/imperialistic) Brits who once ruled this island, most/all(?) Christian festivals probably hold a lesser significance to the Turkish Cypriot population/authorities - so?
I have close TC friends here in the UK who exchange Christmas cards and gifts, but mainly celebrate New Year (very much like the Scots with Hogmanay!)...
I've never heard them (or of ANY reports from any religion) complaining of disruption of services during Ramadan, Eid, or other "festivals"....
....This reminds me of the "takeover" of Texas by "expats"......

Purely ceremonial and since 2007 the convention has been that the prime minister will choose the first-named recommendation.

So you don’t believe the U.K. is a secular state? Apart from a bit of ceremonial nonsense please explain how the Church of England shapes government policy or the law in the U.K.

I get it very much. You are in the TRNC, not the U.K.

Dec 25th is just another working day in the TRNC and therefore work carry’s on. It may well be an important day for ex pats but not for the majority of Turkish Cypriots, Turkish mainlanders and of course the large Pakistani community plus others.

As for the rest of your post, I won’t comment.

In which case I guess you may be at home in the UK in a cosy warm house enjoying your uninterrupted Christmas day with family and maybe friends? Please enjoy, but dont preach to us here who have to suffer this crap year on year.

We get that but does it not strike you as a bit thoughtless?

There is a fairly large expat community here and as this just seems to be a day picked out of the air and seems to me as if it could as easily be the 23rd or 27th of December so it does seem to strike me as a bit bloody minded.

Yes we are a minority but the same people who would quite justifiably criticise the same action in the UK that hits a minority there on Eid or the Chinese New Year will happily wave this through as getting at the Colonialist Imperialistic Brits.

If they scheduled this on St George's Day for example I doubt if anyone would even notice tbh.

In addition, when do we not become a "guest" here? 5 yrs, 10 yrs 20yrs, never? What about the Windrush folk who have been in the UK some 50 years, most have a Uk passport and citizenship, are they still guests then? We have been here 15yrs, complied with all the rules and regulation, paid our taxes, and someone on here still think we are guests here.

I do agree, when you have a large minority such as in the uk with hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Jews, the host should mindful of the minority esp when thy contribute towards the economic wealth of the country.

Given this was planned, it does seem it could have been planned a lot better.

Not to mention kibtec missing out on revenue generated on Xmas day lol...not like them lol

Planned, not planned right. It has happened, yet everyone had pretty much a whole afternoon yesterday to get in touch with KibTek to point out their error in picking Xmas Day to do works.
Anyway, I believe power was back up midday in Girne. Get that Turkey in the oven and enjoy the day.
It's a good time for forgiving, right?
Merry Christmas All!

I am glad the thread has lightened up (oh just realised that might not be the best choice of words) but let’s just accept life for what it is, and not argue and disagree on this one day of the year. Happy Christmas, well as happy as your particular Christmas can be. Be thankful for what we have, and hope for a better new year for us all. I am sure we need it.

I guess I might have leapt to conclusions here. When you said Churchill with your silly nickname in front I assumed you meant Winston. Was it Kevin Churchill or Terry Churchill? Anyhow get that source and it'll clear it up :+1:)

I assume you mean the Adana Conference?

So this stationary train in war time had such an ample larder that it offered Churchill a choice of meals?
They didn’t maybe ask in advance what the guests food preferences would be? You know like they probably do even now?
No, they had such abundant stores they said what do you want Winnie, the sky’s the limit?

So what book was this secret quote in? You say I should read more, well I definitely want to read this book so what one was it? Or is that a secret too?

You know when you do your research do you do any critical thinking?

https://winstonchurchill.org/publicatio ... rkey-1943/

For example what do you make of the sentence?

“Later, menus were passed round for signatures.”

I’ll tell you what I think that indicates. That the menu was already agreed beforehand and the menus were then printed up.

But I guess after they planned the conference, made their way there in war time at great risk and at some point Ismet Inonii said Winnie you must be peckish Numan Menemencioğlu was going to pop down the shop what do you fancy? At which point Churchill came up with........
Is that what happened? 🤣🤣🤣

Why has this turned into yet another pointless argument? Oh and before anyone suggests I don't bother reading it I won't any further but then that argument never works for me. If you have to stop reading certain threads because the usual suspects have hijacked it then you stand a good chance of missing something interesting or useful.
