We both applied for individual high value residencies and took a copy each of the residency agreement with our papers to the cop shop. I believe that one of you can apply and sponsor the other. Can't speak through personal experience but I guess others can help with that.

This is a very good guide to applying for temporary residency and appears to be regularly updated with problems you may encounter. It also advises on the different categories of residency, how a partner may apply and the paperwork required to prove partnership (if unmarried).
