It’s not many days since the last curfew finished. There were 31 cases yesterday and without real measures it will continue to rise.
It’s such a shame really after they defeated it early in the year they have let it get hold big time since. Too little, too late.

Bloody hell!

That's what I call a lockdown.

Just sit and pray the vaccines are dished out asap.

It was to be expected with the higher number of cases, and folk obviously not following social distancing, particularly over the festive season.

Let's hope everyone does as the government asks and stays at home only going out if essential or it may be a very miserable February.

Fingers crossed the 15 days after the new year the people who unfortunately caught it have stayed within their bubble and the next 15 days all the cases will be able to be sourced.

Thanks for that update CW. I suppose it must mean not going anywhere other than supermarket, petrol, pharmacy, I would have thought hospital/doctor visits would be included too. It would be handy if the authorities would clarify and also publish SMS to contact for permission.

It seems that this curfew has been retracted. MP's decided against it. Curfew from 10pm until 5am remains the same up until 23rd Jan when it will be revised.

As I understand it we are awaiting government confirmation re all the committee recommendations and they should be signed off tomorrow at the latest.

It would appear that SOMEONE leaked incorrect information that first time. Nothing changed since decision of January 11th. However not to say they won't change later this week of course. Visiting one of two coffee houses/patisseries last week, its clear to see why numbers are going up. Especially the blokes huddled over small tables playing backgammon. They seem to consider they are omnipotent.

I don't think the wrong information as such was leaked. It is more a case of the Infectious Diseases Committee make their recommendations but they have to be ratified by the Council of Ministers.

As someone else pointed out it is a Coalition Government who can't agree on the time of day let alone anything else. So the argument between safety and financial problems will always be there. If the numbers are stabilising or going down slowly I think we will stay as we are. They won't drop very quickly because the people that were tested positive have been going around for days if not weeks thinking they were OK and transmitting the virus to others. If the numbers continue to rise I think they will have little alternative but to go lock down again.

I can't see why people panic in any case, even when we had our toughest lockdown and Lapta, Alsancak and Karsiyaka were ring fenced with police stopping people from driving up the bye past or driving through Karaoglanoglu to get to Girne without prior permission, the supermarkets here had plenty of everything. The only people who appeared to panic at this end were those who will only shop at the large Ilellis, pathetic really.

The Ministry of Health stated that the new decisions issued by the Contagious Diseases High Committee on 16 January 2021 were discussed thoroughly at the TRNC Council of Ministers and it was decided to follow the current process for one week and, in the event of need, to apply the new decisions taken by the Contagious Diseases High Committee.

The statement is as the following.

“The Contagious Diseases High Committee made new decisions on 16 January 2021 regarding Covid 19 pandemic. As can be appreciated, the Contagious Diseases High Committee makes some decisions according to the number of cases to control the Covid 19 pandemic, however, taking a decision regarding lockdown is under the authority of the TRNC Council of Ministers. The decisions taken by the Contagious Diseases High Committee on 16 January 2021 were discussed thoroughly at the TRNC Council of Ministers and taking into consideration the views of the Ministries regarding the economy, it was decided to follow the current process for one week and, in case of need, to apply the decisions of the Contagious Diseases High Committee taken on 16 January 2021. Therefore, the following decisions taken by the Contagious Diseases High Committee on 11 January 2021 and published on the Official Gazette will be valid until the new decisions are determined.

1. Kyrenia is a massive area though.

So is Karsyaka, Lapta and Alsancak a large area, but the three together were ring fenced at a time when the figures in Alsancak were abnormally high. Police on the main roads. I was stopped once and explained all I wanted was to drive another 100yards to Starlings and was allowed to carry on.

Sophie I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but don't all the three you mention come under Kyrenia as does Essenteppe? They all come under the Kyrenia District and that does not just refer to the town.

When there was an abnormal number of cases in Alsancak much earlier last year, supposedly mostly down to a couple of extended families, the three areas were isolated in order to stop it spreading to Girne proper. I have friends in Alsancak who needed to get to hospital appointments or were working with animals, and they had to contact an address, type where they needed to get to, why and and what time approx they would return and then wait ten minutes or so. Then a reply came back giving permission, which they had to show the police near the Alpet garage. Not sure now how long this went on for, but not very long if memory serves.

I recall that last year and thought they may do the same with Alsancak and Lapta recently but it would seem not. When the figures are given daily it does give figures for Girne and Lefkosa but never really any of the villages. There were two positive in Essenteppe yesterday but they come under Girne. As the figures went up over night from 18 to 23 I suspect if the figures released later for today hsve risen we can rightly expect further restrictions.
