Is there anyone west of Kyrenia that can fix fridges and is able to do a house call? I think it may need re-gassing, although i have no idea what that actually involves. I have been able to save my frozen food but i will lose all the cold stuff.
Any advice?

Sometimes if fridges are turned off for 24 hours and then turned back on again, they work!

Are sure the fuse is ok ( light comes on) pull fridge from wall and clean coils at the back .. check it's not iced up. If not cal "Repair man" when he van travel he's very good 05488707271. I've used him on all white goods and a/c and he's not expensive.

If not I shall call the repair man.

Thank you all so much.

Daisy, regassing on in fridge although possible isn't the most likely cause of your problem. Thermostat failure will keep the compressor off or on depending on how its failed. Another major cause is the failure of the auto defrost system on the evaporator ( coils at the inside back of the fridge) usually getting iced up. My defrost heater on that coil has failed twice. Having said that it could be a number of things and as we all know there is nothing worse than warm beer or warm white wine.

Even a build up of fluff in the 'gubbins' can cause problems. Vacuum out the back where fluff can build up.

If the back of the fridge is quite hot it probably means gas is NOT the issue.... it seldom is, being a sealed system it should never leak.

I third it! ;)

Although, see Thornaby's post re. failure of the auto defrost heater - manually defrosting may allow the cooling system to operate once more, although until the auto defrost system 'heating resistor' (or whatever) is fixed, the problem is likely to recur.

Tip! - Keep the bloody door closed as much as possible - don't leave it open for minutes on end while you root around for stuff ;)

well the 24 hour thing didn't work!
In fact it makes a whirring sound, as if it's on, for about 2 seconds, then stops, then just keeps repeating...almost like it is trying really hard to come on....

Suggestions?

Hi Daisy, sorry to hear you are still suffering with warm beers. By your description it could be a faulty capacitor on the compressor motor. Appreciate you probably can't check or repair it yourself but it may help to understand the possible fault and J say possible!. Most of the motors in your house such as water pumps, aircon motors, even cooling fan motors have a capacitor built into them to make start and run in the correct direction, your fridge motor / compressor will have one. A classic indication of a failed capacitor is the thing you described, a humming noise then nothing. Easy for a competent person to sort out or replace. A low cost fix! Hope this helps.

Just another thought Daisy, the whirring sound is a classic indicator of an iced up evaporator, the fan blades behind the evaporator catch on the lumps of ice , again pointing to a failed auto defrost system. Did you leave the fridge door open over that 24 hour test. Ice can take a very long time to defrost on the evaporator if the door is closed, just like trying to defrost food in the fridge. Empty the fridge, open the door and push warm air in with a electric blow heater.

Hope you got some sort of idea as to cost of repair. I don't know how old your machine is, but sometimes it pays to bite the bullet and buy a new one. You don't want to have recurring problems. There will be campaigns and offers all over the place once lock down is over, the stores will be very anxious to get some money in their tills.

UPDATE: The guy in the shop said it is a compressor failure, and will cost 800tl to fix!!!! Does this seem reasonable? It seems a lot to me...

Regarding my post about compressor not working due to a capacitor failure, if that was the case,TL800 is reasonable, it sounds like the capacitor, which would cost around tl50, so for a call out and fix of around tl 750 I think not excessive. Hope this helps, warm beer is dreadful!

Daisy, we are all at the mercy of repair people, " compressor failure means nothing ", but for Tl 800 I would say go for it especially if you can't repair it yourself!

Latest. So instead of paying 800tl to have my old fridge repaired, I was offered a much bigger and newer one for 1200tl, with a years guarantee.
I have decided to take the new one...lets hope this one doesn't break down.

Again thanks to everyone for all your advice....now back to cold beer!!!! :D
