Internet Access

Think we may know the answer but will ask just in case!

Normally visit N Cyprus 3 times a year staying for a week or two each time. We feel we would like to access the internet when we are on holiday but only for picking up emails and light browsing - no downloading films or on all day.

Presume internet dongle via a mobile network is best solution? If so any recommendations for supplier? How much does it cost? Is it pay as you go? Does it have an expiry date i.e. if you dont use in a period of time you loose the credit? Is there different data bundles available to purchase. Any recommendation as to service provider?

All help appreciated

Yes, dongle is the most viable option in your case.

You purchase a dongle once time and it will be yourse (2 options, you can go with Turkcelll or Telsim, finding out which one has a better service for your location might be crucial)

Next you can get a pay as you go card, and charge it with 3G internet whenever you need. Everytime you do, it will be for 1month, xxGB of traffic, and it will close down whichever one comes first.

If you are coming 3 times a year, this will cost you 3 charges (even if you stay less than 1 month at a time, you cannot freeze or carry over any credit to any future date), anywhere between approx 20TL to more than 100TL each time depending on your usage.

I have a small laptop, I think it is called a notebook. I only use it for emails to my daughter who is in Hong Kong, browsing the forums and news sites and occasionly watching a music video.

I go to either the lad on the Turkcell counter at karakum lemar or the computer shop opposite the teacher's hotel and they 'top up' my 2g dongle.

I give them my mobile telephone number, which, incidently, is telsim, it costs me 40tl for 31 days, a couple of days before it is due to be 'topped up' again, they send me a text, via my laptop to remind me when it runs out.
Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Thanks for the replies, which confirms that the 3G dongle is the way forward for us.

Advice is much appreciated.
