Hi Diddycat
For my money I think you would be better off putting your family videos on to a USB Flash Drive. DVDs and CDs are becoming bit dated now.
Do you still have the means to play your tapes ? If you do, and you have access to a PC or MAC, you could purchase a digitising interface such as Vidbox. This will convert your videos from analog to digital and they will be stored on your computer. From there you could easily transfer them to a USB Flash Drive which could then be inserted in the USB socket of your TV for viewing.
