Maybe not in Girne's town centre, but they're certainly expecting it to snow on the mountains behind Girne tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. It might be your only opportunity this Winter for a frolic in the snow

Every year there is a powdering of snow along the tops of Besparmak not enough for a snow man though it soon goes.

There has been snow in Girne on several occasions - but you have to get up early to see it , as it melts when the sun comes out.!!!

If there is heavy snow on the mountains you will see the cars coming down, with snowmen built on the bonnets gradually melting!

That brings back memories, we were posted out here in Nicosia early 70's and drove up to troodos so see the locals driving back down with snowmen on the bonnets!! couldn't have seen much.

Troodos is the place to go if you want skiiing. I used to take my Lebanese students up there - what fun! In a rickety bus which often seemed was in danger of falling off the edge. also has been known to swim in the sea at Limassol and then freeze in the thick snow at Troodos in the afternoon. But not here of course - not high enough. No Mount Olympos here!

In the 60s when it got too hot in Limassol/Episkopi in the summer, we used to drive to Platres (about half way up Troodos) to cool down.

Btw I gather it has now started snowing on the Lefkoşa road between Boğas andGirne and slippery surface warnings are appropriate.

Yes, snow right along the mountains behind Alsancak and still not melted. I was half asleep when I looked up at the range this morning and thought that they looked a bit odd until I realised it was snow. Hey, I didn't come to Cyprus from Australia for SNOW - I want my jmoney back. But then I look at Australia and the heatwave there, and we were very, very close to the bushfires that hit Victoria on Black Saturday in 2009 when so many died, 11 just south of where we lived, and I never want to go through that experience again, so snow it is.

I think we should add to the gallery.

I have been here now for 25 years and never known the snow to be still on the mountains a day later. As Rambling Rose says it is usually melted by the sun during the day. Would anyone else agree the weather here in Cyprus is definately changing.

If you go to the hotel in Bellapais, cannot remember the name, there is a photo on the wall of Bellapais covered in thick snow I think the photo was taken some years back.

Approx 4 years ago it was certainly hat scarf and glove weather for a couple of Weeks in Dec, I found out to my peril, the same for the following year. Dec 2010 warmer to the point of swimming in the sea on Christmas day on Acapulco beach so history of Brrr weather no doubt.

Foodie you are probably acclimatising or acclimatised one of the two. Lol.

I disagree, why should you get the winter fuel allowance, you chose to live abroad, you should refuse it, there are lots of genuinely needy people who freeze here in the UK for an extended period not a few days.

So if people who get the allowance refuse to claim the heating allowance, even though they are entitled to it, do you think the tax man will refuse to tax their pensions?

What a silly analogy, people who choose to emigrate should not get the benefits that those who freeze in the UK get, you are a bunch of selfish expats who only care about themselves. Think of all those oap's who cannot afford to live in sunnier climates but freeze in the long often freezing winters in the UK, in Cyprus it is rarely really cold for long spells. end of!

I think ex-pats should get a Summer Allowance to help pay for the Aircon in the long periods of hot weather. Just my opinion.

Belle,

Why do you feel the need to be so hostile in your reply?
I am just pointing out that expats pay tax on their pension and if they are entitled to claim an allowance, why shouldn't they?

Belle, if we aren't entitled to benefits in the UK because we emigrated then we shouldn't have to pay tax in the UK either, but we do have to. Also, I have been colder here when it's cold than I ever was in the UK, as the houses have no insulation and are damp and you need a lot of heating to warm them up and it dissipates immediately it's turned off. My house in the UK stayed warm for ages after the heating was turned off and I only ever had the radiators on downstairs as the heat from them heated the bedrooms as well, due to the insulation. Also as Soner said, we also bake in the summer and need to pay a lot in electric for air con for months and months on end. So if we continue to be taxed then I think we should be entitled to keep warm or cool depending, just the same as if we are in the UK. And before anyone says anything, I have a long way to go before I will even receive a pension from the UK let alone heating allowance or any other benefit, but the idea that we live in some ideal climate that is neither too cold or too hot is ridiculous.

It is your choice to live in a different country, not everyone is lucky enough to be able to.

I am not aggresive in my answer, just telling the truth.

"you are a bunch of selfish expats who only care about themselves"

I would say that was aggresive and judgemental.
If you can't enter into debate without comments like the above, there is no point.

It may sound judgemental because the truth hurts, btw the state pension is not taxed unless you are going to tell me otherwise.

Like Zarafet, I have a long way to go before I can claim any pensions, benefits etc from the UK but my husband does.

Yes, you are correct that the state pension does not incur taxes but once claimed, private pensions taxes go up because of it.
At the end of the day, whether you agree with who claims what...expats still pay taxes to the UK that benefits those living in the UK.

Re: Chance if snow ?

The state pension is a taxable benefit. You may therefore be liable to pay Income Tax on any state pension you receive in excess of your personal tax allowance.

Income Tax

Income Tax is payable if your taxable income (including earned income, private pensions and the state pension) is more than your personal tax allowance. It is deducted from any earned income above that allowance.

For example, if your personal allowance is £10,500 and your earned income is £12,000, you pay Income Tax on just £1,500 (£12,000 - £10,500).

Lots of people receiving the allowance in the UK are not "needy people" so perhaps Belle's view would cover them losing it too?

Re: Chance if snow ?

Posted: Thu 10 Jan 2013 12:47 pm
by belle
I agree and those that receive it in the UK that don't need shouldn't get it either, it should be means tested.

The state pension is not taxed if it is the only pension received and the recipient is not working.

Belle .. I worked for almost 49 years to earn my state pension .. The heating allowance believe it or not is linked to the state pension .. Therefore we are entitled to it ..

Can we please keep this thread to the discussion around snow/weather at this time of the year in the TRNC - any additional pictures would I am sure be greatly appreciated especially by those of us back here in the UK. We are expecting things to get colder back in blighty over the next week and a possibility of some snow for us as well.

Can I politely suggest that the discussion re winter fuel allowance be continued on a separate thread - maybe someone would like to start it off - as it seems to be of some interest. Alternatively you could continue the discussion off board. The discussion via Kibkom will of course be moderated accordingly to ensure emotions do not take over and things do not get heated.
