New Google Verification code

Had a go trying to do this but Google won't accept my TC mobile phone number. I've had this problem some years back when they (the computer) insisted I resided in Cyprus with a Turkish phone number.

Me too. Can't see how a world wide company like Google won't accept a valid phone number. Don't know if this is because they think I live in Cyprus but with a Turkish phone number. It remains to be seen how inconvenient this is.

Jane M. You are absolutely correct. I had endless (dozens and dozens) of phone calls with both Google and Microsoft re the Cyprus/Turkey thing many years ago, so much so that I was sort of banned from Main Stream Microsoft. Eventually Google must have accepted the 09 number but it looks as if I might be going through it all again. No matter what I did, they recognised the ISP number as being "in Cyprus". I'd be interested to hear how other people avoid this problem. If its anything like the two extra levels of security that Halifax have installed in the last 18 months, then its going to be very inconvenient.

I have just set up 2 step verification code without my phone number.
Trouble is it was a bit of a faff and a bit of trial and error so I can’t remember exactly what I did.
However if you can get into your account in the normal way, ie not 2 step verification. Go into your account and find security settings. There you should see two step verification. Switch it on, it will then take you to different areas, there is a part for phone number, wouldn’t accept any of my numbers TRNC or UK. Also there is your device list ie I phone iPad Etc.. Then I think it ask you to verify how you wish to receive you verification code SMS OR TEXT. SMS is default don’t bother with that. Underneath you should see BACK UP CODES select that. There should be 10 different codes, it then says print or download and I HAVE MY CODES.
Take a screenshot of those codes. Select I have my codes. It then seems to work. You will get a Email to say it’s set up. If you sign out and then sign in enter email or username then password. You should then get a screen pop up on your device. It doesn’t have to be a phone that’s registered with Google asking you to confirm it’s you. Select what it ask you to select and you should be into your account.
Please note - this worked for me I don’t have any android devices I use Apple. Also this two step verification is going to be implemented on everyone from 9th November.

Not if I have to follow your instructions it won't. Just joking, but seriously I didn't have a clue what you were saying. Sorry.

I know it is a bit of a faff on but two step verification codes are a must in todays world. You should have them on anything that is connected with your finance and/or personal information.
I do worry about the day I change phone numbers (inevitable me being a middle-eastern expat) but that is something I will worry about another day.

If only it were as simple as that, its when Google won't accept my TRNC phone number when the big problem occurs, (at least in my case, some people might be able to solve the problem in one go)

Same here, Google refused to accept my number no matter what I tried. I ended up using a virtual number from
AnonymSMS, got the verification code instantly and it finally let me through.

I had to get UK solicitors involved last year when Halifax/Lloyds refused to contact me and now have reluctantly put both the codes on their IT files but with extremely bad grace. The amount of bumphf I had to send them to prove I didn't live in Turkey was ridiculous.

Re 2 step, in order for this to work you must have your phone set to automatically update your time.
