Anyone else had this problem when buying on line
You know that nowadays they (your bank) ring you back and ask that you say a 4 figure code back to them to confirm its you. Well I've tried to pay my Turkcell bill this morning and the computer says I'm trying to pay "four million, 6 hundred thousand and ???? pounds" in TRY. I hit the cancel button. I know things are increasing here but this is silly. Think I'll pop down to the Turkcell shop instead!!

Never had that before. Sounds DAF to me. 6 digit code seems to be the norm these days particularly as part of 2FA in banking which is texted then you enter it into the bank / website you're dealing with.

MnM this is the first time I have "shopped on line" for well over a year, I was so astounded that I cancelled and went through the procedure again. Sure enough, my phone bill was in the millions according to my UK bank. I've popped into my TRNC bank and paid it. 6million plus, was a bit rich for me!!

I wonder if it is because they separate numbers here with a comma rather than a dot which maybe makes it look like a much bigger number to your UK bank?

Shucks, you've found me out. I should contact my UK bank I guess but surely a bank the size of Halifax, Lloyds etc, should be aware of a , and a . don't you think?

To be fair I would rather not trust the Banks in the UK to do the right thing and make sure that you put them in the picture. Better safe than sorry I think even though getting in touch with any Company on the phone these days is a nightmare.

Do you really mean, DON'T trust banks in UK to do the right thing. I'd rather trust them than here.

Yes I am afraid so. I agree with what you say but sadly in my experience standards of workmanship in all areas has dropped and that includes banks. It isn't a case of not trusting the bank it is a case of making sure that you know what the situation is and having trust that the one employee you have contact with actually does their job properly to protect you and your account.
I know it is wrong to generalise but when it comes to my money I want to know that there are no mistakes made by anyone including me.
As an example from my news feed today.

BB, might be an idea to get a Revolut or Starling card, to save you paying bank charges when paying for anything in TL (or another currency other than Sterling). You do need a UK address and phone, but presumably you do at least have the latter for your UK bank.
With Revolut, you get virtual cards, so you can pay online without actually needing a physical card. There is also a "one off use " virtual card, which is great for paying anything online, gives that extra bit of security.

If I get a Revolut or Starling card to pay phones, electricity, Amazon etc, does that remove the endless levels of security with more and more 6 number PINs, that I have to go through now before UK bank will release money as they treat paying for electricity etc as "buying on line" Not sure what you mean by a "one off use" card though.

It sort of does remove endless security checks. I cannot speak about Starling yet. However with Revolut, which I've had for a good while, I sometimes need to ok it on my phone for online transactions, but not always, through the app. For example, when I paid both my Turkcell and Kibtek bills though Paypoint, Turkcell did not need approval, but Kibtek did. Perhaps the amount needing paying triggers needing approval, I really have no idea. It's just a case of signing into the app and approving the transaction on your phone.benjaminbutton wrote: ↑Wed 15 Dec 2021 7:10 pmIf I get a Revolut or Starling card to pay phones, electricity, Amazon etc, does that remove the endless levels of security with more and more 6 number PINs, that I have to go through now before UK bank will release money as they treat paying for electricity etc as "buying on line" Not sure what you mean by a "one off use" card though.
I have only recently received my Starling card, and used it today for the first time. Got it for back up, as well as being able to take out more cash on a monthly basis than is allowed by Revolut without incurring charges. Revolut is equivalent of £200 per rolling month, believe that Starling is £300 per day, can't remember if there is a monthly limit, but I think there is. This is taking money out here in TL, as taking out money in Sterling incurs charges.
Perhaps someone else can give you more info on Starling, as I am new to using this.
Regarding Revolut virtual cards which you can use without having a physical card. Through the app, you can choose to use a virtual "one off" card. This generates a new card number every time you use it, and can only be used once. Thus, if any retailer tries to charge you twice with that card, it won't work, let alone any dodgy retailers. For this very reason, I think that Revolut comes up trumps, and this "one off" virtual card should be adopted by other banks.
I should add that Revolut does not have an actual banking licence in UK (as far as I am aware yet), but your money is ring-fenced in a UK bank, thus giving you security. It is a prepay card, whereas Starling has a banking licence in UK, and is just like any UK bank, but only online, no physical branches.

Thanks for that alphamike, food for thought. I suppose its because I'm a bit of a traditionalist and find change a tad worrying, not to say confusing!!

Understand totally BB. It took me a while to get a Revolut card, being a bit wary, but it's been fab for using here, and glad that I have Starling too now.
