Cypriots can get a years TOM89 but then they are all treated as EU citizens so I would think that if you are a EU citizen the same should apply to you. I am also interested in replies to this question but can't really help - sorry.

EU citizen can get 1 year TOM89.Providing car registered in their name. But only person named on TOM89 can drive car.

I didn't know that. Strange then how they let you put several drivers on insurance for south.

Lintorf - the TOM89a is free - The only hassle's are, it only lasts for 24 hours (no time of issue is ever included) and you have to queue up at the issue office, which is strategically placed so that you can't really park near it without difficulty (and you have to reverse back out of the parking spot) but the very helpful staff will want to see the vehicle!
If you have not been to get one before remember that it is only available from the Metahan crossing point, the issue office is on the right hand side attached to the right hand side passport check point so you can't park in front of it either. The office is only supposed to open from 08:00 to 17:00 - not sure if it is open on a Saturday but not on a Sunday either. You will need your passport, UK driving license as your Turkish one is a fake unless you are Cypriot. You may require your TRNC car tax and insurance - but sometimes you won't BUT you will need your vehicle log book to prove that you are the owner of the vehicle!
There is a car park opposite the insurance booths that you can park in but always be expected to produce your vehicle for inspection - depending on the weather and how busy the guy is at the time - lol. Don't expect to be able to strike up a conversation with either, his attitude is restricted to grunts and chucking your documents back to you in a pile - nice welcome to the RoC for all visitors I find.
Good luck, it is an experience not to be missed, expect delays and don't forget that you then need to buy your car insurance - minimum of one month! Welcome to the Republic of Cyprus!!
It is also true that only the vehicle owner has permission to drive on the TOM89a but that the insurance office will issue insurance to anyone, this has always been the case even for when you were an EU citizen by the way, it's just that the old TOM was all in Greek and did not actually state that. It will be interesting one day when I get stopped because I can still drive legally for 90 days in the RoC on my UK license the same as for driving a hire car! I will also be named on the insurance and I think the battle in court would be extremely difficult for the EU to prove me wrong and illegal but then again it's Cyprus so I will always pack sandwiches just in case they don't serve any in the nick - lol.

Apparently if you have a UK licence they will only give you the one day. Someone had an Irish passport but only a UK driving licence.

ljarvo, depends on what your passport is! If you have a UK passport then regardless of what you are given the TOM89a is only valid for you for one day! The law has changed since the UK left the EU but it seems that the RoC have made up their own laws yet again. I just wonder now about those UK passport holders who want to hire a vehicle in the RoC yet live in the TRNC themselves? Or are they now saying it is just a TRNC registered vehicle belonging to a UK passport holder that is subject to the new laws.
Confusing indeed, I will wait and see for a couple of months then email them again to find out "exactly" what the new laws apply to. The Dept of Transport in the RoC is very helpful by the way.

I have a UK passport and the paperwork clearly says I have 1 year.
My friend also got one year as well.

ljarvo, not disputing the fact that the paperwork would clearly say valid for 1 year at all. Just repeating what either the BRS, TFR or BHC stated about the legality of a 1 year TOM, can't remember which office it came from just that it was official and not supposition. Must admit that if I ever manage to get a 1 year TOM I would just accept it and carry on driving - lol. The odd things about this whole mess is that the BHC stated that the TOM is only valid for a "Single" crossing in a 24 hour period but never mentioned that it only allows the driver noted on the TOM is the only one allowed to drive that vehicle.
With any luck the RoC will give up the idea of a single day soon, it must be causing them loads of extra work I hope.
