First it asked me to update whatsapp and when I trclicked on the link given, it told me there was no device and now I can't have it at all

Go to app store and reinstall.

When I do that, it already says 'installed' but nothing happens when I try and click on rhat

Try going into all your list of apps and uninstall whatsapp, then try to re download it again from app store.

I did that too, but it still says installed, I also restarted the phone

Sorry, not sure, but did you uninstall it from your Apps in General Settings?

Have you got any other problems with your phone since clicking the link? Only asking, and i don't want to alarm, but do you know the link was genuine? I've had WhatsApp on at least 3 phones over the last 10 years or so, as has the wife and neither of us has ever been asked to manually update WhatsApp.

MnM, like you I've had WhatsApp for donkeys years and never been asked to update, however, I saw the layout on a phone owned by someone who had just installed the App, and it did look a bit different to my layout and seemed to have one or two what I thought were annoyances.

To state the obvious is your phone too old to support the WhatsApp service. They were stopping it working on older phones. Have you tried an antivirus and malware App to see if that helps? Otherwise It looks like a backup to an existing computer followed by a reset and a complete reinstall.
