I suspect it depends on what and how strong you are looking for?

You just need to go into a reputable pharmacist (I honestly believe some are very much more trained than other) and ask the question. No harm done.

Try St Johns Wort
St. Johns wort is not suitable for everyone and is known to interact with many medications. Always ask a pharmacist for advice before taking it.

Agree about St Johns Wort, just because some medications are homeopathic does not make them harmless. My pharmacist on the Alsancak/Karaoglanoglu border is trained in both and I personally would trust her opinion on most things pharmaceutical.

Yes, can get antidepressants over the counter. Why do you think you need them? Not being too personal but it's important to take the correct drugs for your symptoms. All antidepressants are not the same.

I realize there could be different situations, but try to avoid taking them. Rather take natural stuff, even some alco maybe. These meds are kind of last resort. Always better to try to help your own body to fix the issues with natural stuff first.

Assuming you feel unhappy Hammerhead hence the query, i would suggest you seek professional advice and preferably a GP that knows your medical history, or you could end up worse off. I had Amitriptyline many years ago but only as a neuropathic dosage and also Gabapentin, which can cause depression. 3 months and several Psychologist visits later, it's a road i won't be going down again.
