Might seem a daft question, but does anyone know where I can buy salad cream. See mayonnaise all over the place, but not salad cream. Thanks to you in advance x

When I was back in UK end June, beginning July there was no Heinz Salad cream to be had in any Tesco or Sainsburys. The reason they gave at the time was they were refusing to pay what Heinz was asking. There was also a shortage of Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup.

It goes to show how many people like salad cream!
The biggest differences between mayonnaise and salad cream are that salad cream has more oil, and salad cream has more vinegar.
I think that you can probably see where this is heading...
If you're absolutely desperate for the tangy hit of salad cream, try this: -
Put two desert spoons of mayo into a small bowl, vigorously whisk in a couple of drops of vinegar (whatever you've got 'to hand')
Taste, and repeat until you're happy with the taste.
It won't be quite the same as salad cream of course because there are other differences in the ingredients, but in a culinary emergency, it may suffice

helendj. I tried that once and with the best will in the world, try as I might, drop at a time, it wasn't the same. But better than nothing if you're absolutely desperate but I haven't been that desperate yet. Life isn't the same with out the real thing is it?

No you're absolutely right benjaminbutton, we're so used to a certain quality aren't we. I would not have believed that I was so attached to salad cream as I am! But I'm sure if we wait long enough it will come back to us. Thank you so much to all of you who have commented, its been very useful and very entertaining. Mmmm wonder what I'm going to miss next, lol. Thank you all.

We went South on Tuesday, I saw Heinz salad cream in the supermarket, I bought two bottles which you are welcome to. We live in Ozankoy about 400 yards from Erdiners supermarket, you may already have some by now?

The store I used to buy at discontinued the product and then purchased it at a Jamaican store in LA on a trip there. Took a real chance on buying Heinz Salad Cream on Amazon hoping it would be the real deal ...and it was. The taste was spot on to previous store purchases. Salad Cream is great on cheese sandwiches, with cold cuts sandwiches, steak, and eggs hamburgers, and many other dishes. If you have an English , West Indian and or South African background and palette you will probably like Salad Cream very much . I highly recommend.
