We have just started using our log burner, unfortunately the glass in the door gets very Black, it did this with our last log burner, but this soot is very difficult to remove the next day. Is there a cleaning agent on the market which would make cleaning it easier? Thank you for any replies.

Dip a damp sponge in wood ash in the bottom of your woodburner and rub the glass door with it. Polish off with newspaper or kitchen towel. Best thing we've found.

Ceramic hob cleaner works really well. It's gentle and doesn't scratch the glass but does remove the soot. Illelli stocks it.

This works...

Burning damp or wet wood causes this to happen.

Thanks for all your tips. A friend of mine found a spray called Victas stove glass cleaner. I got a bottle from the shop which sells log burners, on your left when travelling towards Girne, sorry cant think of its name, begins with the letter A, cost is 114 TL a bottle.

I just use foam oven cleaner from Mr Pound
Spray on , Lear a minute and wipe off with kitchen roll
The ash method works but you risk scratching the glass

The active ingredient is Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda) which is so good at removing baked-on soot that it's used for de-coking exhaust systems...

Kitchen and oven cleaners often use this chemical, although you need to check the ingredients list.

Also used for unblocking drains.

Wear rubber gloves and use eye protection, & avoid contact with aluminium because it will affect the appearance

I don't find the Mr Pound oven cleaner, very good on ovens!! It might be great for other things though, but burned on fat, not so.

Check that it contains Sodium Hydroxide!
