Does anyone have any recommendations for where to purchase a water filter system. I know there used to be a place in Alsançak but that never seems to be open.

They sell a water filtering system in PoolLand along with replacement filters. Doesn’t filter to drinking water but it does filter out a good amount of the muck and grit from the system.

We have a Cebilon water system, which fits under the sink, and bought the original one seven years ago. We upgraded the same system last year to the latest model which is available from Ihlas in Girne and can be seen on their web site. It is not the cheapest, round about the £400 price and the company come out twice a year to renew the filters. The phone number for Ihlas is 0392 444 4949 and you need to ask for an English speaker. On our recommendation a number of friends have now fitted these systems and, like us, were glad not to have to bother with the large water containers. Hope this helps!

How does one know if twice a year filter change is sufficient for drinking water?

Have you seen the state of your filters once removed after six months?

We have a two pairs of water filters set up for our mains water supply. First set immediately after feeding to our property. The second after our pump.

We have below ground water storage and roof top water storage.

Both sets of filters require changing on average every six weeks because the filters turn brown and algae type grown appears.

We don’t drink our water from the taps.

The unit is under the sink and for drinking water only! We have had the water analysed a couple of times and was found to be safer than the water in the 19 litre bottles. Also we watch the cartridges being changed so know the state they are in when taken out. Never had any problems with the company who have been in the TRNC for many years!

Much as I would dearly love to be, I am not yet to be convinced drinking water filtration systems with six monthly filtration cartridges changes, provide water fit to drink for the duration between filtration system filter changes.

And you have had a drinking water filtration system supplied and (presumably) installed by Ihlas for the past seven years. You have had the filtered water analysed a couple of times during this period of water filtration system ownership. Correct?

Interesting. Define "safer". This could be a good comparative test. You had water taken from 19L bottles tested also?

We buy Evsu 19L bottled water. I have never had the Evsu water analysed to prove one way or the other, the Evsu water is fit to drink.

I am yet to go down with a bug, or worse, carried in any drinking water supplied here.

Who supplied the 19L bottled water you tested against the feed from your drinking water filtration system please?
Who conducted the tests?
Did you use sterile receptacles for each comparable test?
When was the last comparable test conducted?
When was the last test of water taken from the output of your water filtration system tested?

If my cartridges are brown after just six weeks, or less. Left for, let's say a couple of months, the filters start to form green growth, what state are your cartridges in if only changed every six months?

You are using a mains water feed to your drinking water filtration system (likewise to the other water needs of your home), correct?

filtration systems for drinking water are reverse osmosis systems.
you need two, better three pre filters to ensure no small particles enter the Reverse Osmosis main filter system, which is the permeate pump and the RO filter membran.
the pre filters need to be changed when required.
the main filter, the osmosis part, also has a life time , here: amount of drinking water filtered/produced.

only if both filter systems work properly you will get clean drinking water. intervalls are 6 month or less (in cyprus) for the prefilters and latest a year for the osmosis membran.

waterconsumption is 3 to 10 liters for each drinkable liter, which is a quite high.
costs are approx , say 400 for the installation plus 100 a year for the prefilters- RO membran...

I think they have a paper on the window saying that you must call to arrange a visit as they don't stay there all day. They sell "Aquaphor" which is quite a good filter actually.

In the south, we fitted a filter right after our water meter, to protect all the pipework on the property. We first fitted the type where you have to change the filter regularly. We were told to change it after 6 months.

After 3 months our pump stopped working. No water was reaching the pump because the filter was packed with sediment. As a result, the gritty incoming mains water had bypassed the filter, entered our pipework and blocked the system so badly that no water was reaching the pump.

We did not want to have to change the filter every few weeks so we fitted another product with a backwash feature. Turn a valve and the filter cleans itself in a few seconds. Product is called BWT Adventi RF.
