Just received the news that Bamboo Beach Market was sabotarged last night, with a fair amount of damage carried out.
I just can't believe this sort of thing going on here.......

They are having security cameras installed and 24 hr security.

Such a shame.

Do you think someone is jealous or just pure vandalism? The thing is why should they now have to spend money on camera's because of some idiots.

I would say jealousy, but thats pure speculation. And simply because we don't get vandals here. Hope this is not a sign of the times......

The good news is Al & his team have it all up and running again ready for Sunday.

I cannot see what anybody could be jealous of, there are very few stalls, or customers, there. It seems to have been closed more Sundays than it was open so it,s not what I would call exactly pulling in the punters.

Sorry to hear your views Elizabeth. I was going to visit it this Sunday because I'd been led to believe it was really good, in good surroundings and could only improve as Spring and Summer comes along.

take a look sophie. I havenot been down there recently but know that it has been cancelled due to bad weather. It is worh a trip to take a look, but it depends what you are looking for. As I understand it he does not allow more than one stall of each kind, but it is a nice setting.
Of course if you are looking for a really cheap secondhand bargain, then pop ondown to Pine Bay Boot Fair, but it is further along and not on the coast, but an extremely friendly atmosphere.
Both have their good points, but the weather at this time of the year can be a killer for stall holders and customers.

Do you not think maybe damage was caused due to the torrential rain last night, it is on the seafront and we have seen a a lot of damage to our property (on other occssions) which on first site would strongly appear to be vandalism, lets hope this is the case, we would never want to see this kind of thing in Northern Cyprus!

I agree it is a beautiful setting but my own opinion is that in order to attract customers, many of whom will have been to Lambousa on the Saturday, there needs to be a wider variety of goods for sale. Not cheap and tatty second hand stuff as can be bought at some of the markets but nice, attractive and appealing things to encourage people to make return visits and to tell their family and friends about.

I went on the second Sunday and it was interesting, but at the moment I am not buying anything, and could not even get a cup of coffee as my husband could not climb the steps to the beautiful coffee area. But I am no complaining. It must be difficult to start a busienss that is different. Maybe it would help Al August to kno what people would like to find and then find stallholders with that merchandiise who would go regularly to Bamboo.

Marion, it doesn't have steps up to the cafe, just a sloping ramp, and we've enjoyed many coffees in the sun up there, so give it a try. We think it's an excellent market, attractive stalls and good quality goods, but the weather is a problem for all outside markets at present. Pine Bay is also worth regular visits -- the two are quite different but each has its appeal.

Have to disagree with Elizabeth. There may be fewer stalls than its main rival but you will notice the lack of junk and tatty old clothes. I think come the better weather it will really take off. Lot of effort being put in to it by Al and it deserves to succeed - which I and many others think it will.

Absolutely agree with "trooper" --it's a pleasure to walk around Bamboo without being confronted by piles of often scruffy clothes, and junk. I know one man's junk etc.etc but personally, I wouldn't even look at anything not on a hanger and looking clean. Good luck to Al,--he has the right idea, and should do well, particularly when the better weather settles in.

I think that Pine Bay and Bamboo can complement each other. Pine Bay has lots of second hand goods which are the right kind of price for certain locals, whereas I believe Al has a policy at Bamboo of no duplication. so each has its merits.
And yes, Dog Walker I will take himself down there again some time, but when the weather is fine. One problem I found was getting the car in and out, in so far as the entrance is narrow and only one car can pass at a time, and I was fearful that come the usmmer when many more will go there, it could prove difficult. But as long as I can take my dog to enjoy the sea air, I can go on there after Pine Bay or vice versa.

I don't go to Lamboussa any more - mainly because I get up too late (!) - well sometimes, but chiefly because I was told I cannot have my dog there, not even in the outdoor part. so I make my own choices.

Sorry to contradict but Pine Bay isn't full of just second hand stuff. There are some, after all it is meant as a car boot.

But there are stallholders that do sell new things - costume jewellery, watches, perfumes, aftershaves, deodorants, hairsprays, hair scissors, hair clippers, kitchen electricals and sun tan lotions (at the right time of year!!). There are also some new clothes that are sold by someone who has had to close down their shop. And then you have good quality items such as the gold and silver stalls.

Well, that covers about 4 of us that I can think of anyway!

In any case, from a customer's point of view, I would enjoy a good few hours out traipsing around one market, then another quite different one. Then you can get all the markets out of the way in one day and plan the rest of your week elsewhere. I know back in the UK my old aunt and gran used to look forward to every Saturday to sit down and plan their Sunday morning route around every single market and car boot happening within a 10 mile radius!! Sad isn't it!! but it kept them busy and out of mischief

Well said Pippie, you are correct it is a totally different atmosphere, it is a car boot sale and not a market, which obviously does not mean it is full of junk, the stalls change week to week, and we have quite a few more this week, so instead of classing two totally business's as opposition why not let them compliment each other, after all this is not Cyprus 44!

I am struggling to believe that this thread has been started as 'sabotaged', this is the oxford dictionary's meaning of the word:

'deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct (something)'

That is a very strong accusation in anyone's language, so where is the proof? Has someone been charged? Who is the initiator of this thread aiming this at? On what grounds has this accusation been made?

On the evening of this damage there were several small tornados out at sea (probably only about 3-4kms off shore), could it have been the aftermath of one of these?

I hate to think of it but could the answer be as simple as hooliganism and vandalism? I know it is a concept alien to us in the TRNC but times are changing here as we have seen by the recent newspaper headlines on crime.

If any person is wondering about the Markets here why dont you go and have a look for your self and make a decision what you like and dont like about them.

Marion you have to open your eyes if you have been down there as there are no steps to the Bar Area and as for getting in there with your car it has a road into the car park and you may have to allow another car to pass so why the issue over entrance to the area.
If you want to know about the Sabotage go and ask Al August Junior.

People dont listen to forum gossip go and make your own decisions.

you have me wrong Stevie. It was (indirrectly)via the mouth of al that I learned that the report of the 'sabotage' seems to have been exaggerated, and one must bear in mind that maybe the person who posted in the first place was using a word that to her meant the same as 'damaged'. Linguistics here can sometimesbe very confusing. hence my question. I agree entirely about rumours here.

I apologise if I too used wrong terminology when referring to the Bar. Maybe I was merely listening to my husband who took one look and said 'no way' His mobility is not what it used tp be.

as to my referral re cars. I had no problems, but i could see that on a crowded Summer Sunday (or any day of the week) it might cause some difficulties.

And please be assured that I am sure most people would not be vindictive to other markets. They all have their place here and provide something for everyone. I went to Bamboo once; don't go to Lamboussa at all but frequent others where I go to see friends or for a story.

I quite agree that it could have been he weather that caused damage - I didn't go and see, and have to rely on the reports of others which are similar to that statement 'reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated!' This is certainly a place for rumours and exaggerations.

In a sense the subject is now closed unless someone can tell me REALLY what happened. i hope it was the weather and not someone being nasty. The weather we cannot control, but nastiness we do not want - do we?

I agree Marion, that this thread as been done to death. Pine Bay has twice had all it's covered ripped off, but just put it down to the high winds each time that it happened, so as Bamboo is by the beach, I think it is much more likely that it was the wind that did their damage as well. Lamboussa had all their large umbrella's ruined a couple of years ago by high winds. A lot of people had property and garden things damaged by the wind that week, so why have Bamboo said sabotage?

O.K. Twaddle, just for you and then I will lock this thread.

Bamboo Beach is at alsancak. The turn off to the site is down the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and then you are directed by notices. Fundamentally it is part way down the road and then a right and follow down to the old Mosquito Beach. But there are signs on the road that the market is open. At the moment on Sunday, but will be Wednesdays and possibly more as summer approaches.

as to the damage. Well, whatever it was (and it could well have been the winds) it is now all done, dusted, repaired and 'business as usual'
