Alzheimers Care

Question. Would it be better for an Alzheimer’s sufferer to receive 24 hour care in the UK (in a hospital or care home) or here in a private home with 24 hour care?
This is not a question of the cost it is a question about the standard of care available!
The person, currently in hospital, can not look after themself, is occasionally mildly aggressive, on medication and is in late stage Alzheimer’s.
During lucid times has expressed a desire to return to their country of birth! Is private home care available in the TRNC?
Happy to receive any comments/suggestions or personal experiences on the forum or by PM/email as well, am asking for a friend!
Thanks.

Not much experience in this but what I have seen it s terribly hard on the career, but a good career here I would think would be better than in the uk. If the patient has their own house here and funds they would be better looked after and the weather is much better. I would suggest a career and a separate person to manage the finance etc obviously both trustworthy.

Someone in late stages of Alzheimers is going to need specialist care , which is provided in the UK.

In the UK there are specialists agencies like the Alzheimer’s Association and many others who would offer specialist advice as well as having careers who know how to deal with this stage of life.

My partner BBB sadly was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2016.
The first two years after this we were able to maintain a quality of life with the help of his medication but then he had huge drops until he became so poorly and there was nothing that could be done for him here. I do not want to go into personal details of how he was suffering and my suffering.
He was on the highest dose of the medication and the neurologist confirmed that BBB was in the last stages of Alzheimers.
I had been able to look after and care for him with no help other than the medication for five years here.
After numerous falls and incidents where BBB was in danger as was I, a family decision was made with our children in the UK to get BBB back to give him the specialist care he needed.
Their words to me! What if something happened to you?
My son flew out to take BBB back and his son and my daughter found a caring nursing home specialising in Alzheimers,/ Dementia care where BBB was admitted to.
BBB did receive gentle and loving care within the home but there is not a miricle cure is there for this horrific and soul destroying desease
BBB passed on the 11th August 2022 only 10 months after he left his beloved North Cyprus.
What can I say? I can't advise on such a heartbreaking matter but I can share what I and BBB went through.
If you want to private message me feel free to do so..
Hope this helps in someway.
BBB's other half. .

bigbadbob, Many thanks for your comments and information, sorry for delay in answering but we have been busy with our friend trying to help him through this time when reality has started to bite and he is aware that he will soon have to make a decision over what to do. I know what he wants to do but I can not and will not put my thoughts into words for him, it has to be his decision alone.
By alone I do mean that it is his decision after considering all the thoughts of his family as well - friends are just friends in the long run! His health is not good either and the constant care he has had to provide for his partner has taken its toll on him in many ways so it is not going to be easy.
One of the big problems he has is the care provision for his partner if he makes the decision to bring them to Cyprus, knowing that there is little help here is one concern but having been told already by one of the NHS clinical advisors, who are carrying out assessments of his situation, that he should not put his partner into a care home as they do not provide the required care and in most cases are simply there to make money!
So it is rock and hard place for him at this time.

My limited experience of the care homes here is that the staff and occupants only spoke Turkish which worsended the situation resulting with the withdrawall of the friends family member as a patient.

13roman58, thanks but that would not be a problem as the sufferer and partner are both Turkish Cypriots and would not have any language barrier. My friend is currently looking for both care homes - as a last resort - and trained carers who would live in the sufferers home as they would be required to be available 24/7. Having already contacted one "Care Provider" who can only provide occasional visits I am beginning to believe that no trained carers are available in the TRNC. We will see.

Waddo have a look at an article in todays Daily Mail (UK)
There is a report about retirement homes with special care available in Thailand.

Thanks again but the choice is UK or TRNC there is no other option due other family commitments.
