My advice would be to go for the very highest specification that you can afford, because the operating systems require more and more memory and processor resources every time that they upgrade - that's why your current computer is running at a snail's pace!

If you get a laptop now that is 'just' adequate, then next year it will run slow...

Ram is important not less than 8 gig for windows unless chrome book 4 gig .
Hard drive can be extended cheaply via usb or memory cards .
2 Grandchildren have had Chrome books touch screen £200 to £270 .
Windows needs the 8 gig ram and uses your memory in RAM and general storage .
Chromebook is the same as your android phone opperating system you just add aps and microsoft office as app works fine
UK and black friday or cyber monday 27 November

If your current laptop is super slow and you're looking for something budget-friendly, it's worth checking around during sales like Black Friday or Cyber Monday. I agree with others here, aim for at least 8GB of RAM if going with Windows, as it'll future-proof the laptop a bit. A Chromebook might work if you’ll mainly use it for light browsing and documents, but they have limitations compared to a full Windows laptop.

This thread is over 2 years old, as are a few others, which have strangely been resurrected for no apparent reason.

I know it is an old thread but the company that Reyntj recommended has some good deals, I recently bought from them. I would not normally recommend a shop on the south side but I had no choice as I could not get a high spec desktop here. I paid less than half price for an ex demo model.
