Can anyone inform me of the procedure when you buy a car in a private sale?

You'll need to go to the tax office to change ownership. You'll need all the paperwork related to the car ie mot,tax, and log book. You'll need to take your ID plus copies. You'll also need stamps. Some people prefer to use a Notar to avoid going and leave it to the person buying the car. I've never done this as would rather oversee it myself. Someone here can explain I'm sure.

Don't the previous owners need to go with you?

Yes, you have to go together to tax office or you can use notar and new owner can go alone. I don't know about the notar and what they have to do.
