7 hours off grid. Who on earth voted this lot in. Big pockets and small hearts. Complete nightmare. Thankfully I put my kids in the akapoopco or been a bleeding nightmare. Sure something must be done bar just increase the price

Gates, short answer they cannot.

We bought our house in 1995 and mover permanently very shortly after. It has always been the same with electric and water as long as we have been here. Admittedly, the electric network was much worse then (power boxes on poles exploding quite regularly), and most days we had no electric for most of the day. Mid 2000's some investment was made in the network infrastructure and things improved for a while. While they seem to be working on the network infrastructure (power lines, etc.) they never seem to quite 'get it right' or 'finish' the job; all seems piece meal with no overall plan.

The huge trench being dug along the main road from Çatalköy to Ozankoy/Girne was a mystery; transpires a 'certain hotel' laid their own underground mains power cable direct to a substation to get reliable power, serious money spent me thinks.

What doesn't help here is come every election, the winners 'carve-up' the main Ministries between them - the main aim is to have widen your 'power-base' as much as possible - certain ministries are worth more than others. Of course throw into the mix the fact that each sector of government work has it's own dedicated unions (sometimes more than one), and it gets difficult to manage anything, or in the case of KIBTEK, almost impossible to introduce modern generation methods, especially any that reduces the staffing levels. Much talk over the years of KIBTEK being privatised but the union has never allowed it, and no government has carried through on the 'threat'.

That electric production & supply has become heavily politicised doesn't help, coupled with KIBTEK being forced to take on the debt of the private electric supplier, AKSA, has almost brought it to it's knees; there is simply no money to upgrade the production let alone repair it, or install new greener energy production methods.

People are being cut off for debts of less than 700Tl, but many government departments, hospitals, mosques, ERCAN airport (privately run) and of course hotels and casinos all owe billions of Tl in debt - this alone could build a new power station!

Electric from Turkiye? According to a columnist in KIBRIS Posta said the other day, despite so much talk of this power line over the years, they haven't even started surveys/feasibility studies yet, and they cannot agree whether it will be a one way system, or bidirectional!

No consolation, but things are as bad in the south- the EAC network has not been upgraded for years; continue to produce power from heavy oils; the EU fine them €300,000,000 each year, but they don't care as they just pass this onto the consumer.

Regarding water, talks about solutions went on for years; all sorts were tried before we have the undersea pipe. Longer term residents might remember the farce of the tugs towing huge balloons filled with water from Mersin. Needless to say it didn't work with many sinking, lost or the water contaminated with sea water.

Yes it has! More cars, more people, more buildings and more red tape to cut to live the peaceful life most old timers liked and supported. It's all over the world. Unfortunately we foreigners did not sell their land but purchased it.
A born and bred person before 1990 surely can not recognise their cyprus.

This is correct and is a disgrace. However, if you have solar panels and net metering, and if you harvest more energy than you consume, you do not pay the dirty fuel tax. The tax is levied only on your excess consumption above what your panels produce.
